Lifelong learning is an important skill for everyone to practice, especially an engineer. As our societies develop and grow, the problems we face change and develop as well. Lifelong learning provides a get method for an engineer to find the best solution to better our societies.
In the past, I have used many strategies to find sources for furthering my knowledge. News sites and scientific journals have proven to be great resources for finding professional information, however, sources need to be evaluated before using them. Sources that are more recent generally hold more up to date and correct information. Another effective way to evaluate the source is by considering the author(s), the title, and the language of the paper. Well known authors and authors with much experience in the field they are researching have more credibility than others on the topic. The title and language of the paper can also show credibility and validity. Papers that are less opinionated and more factually based provide better information and allow for opinions to be drawn on facts.
I have used these skills to evaluate given information and use that information to solve problems. I have used articles to further my knowledge in the world of neuroscience and engineering. Reading scholarly articles about the advancements in neurological engineering has allowed me to learn about how other are approaching situations in this field and what results they are finding.
I intend to pursue a career in Neurological Engineering. I am most interested in designing equipment and prosthetics to help treat those with motor disorders. Lifelong learning will be very important to this career as many of the mechanisms and processes concerning the brain and nervous system are still unknown to researchers and specialists. As more of these discoveries are made, the way that products and devices are designed and used will be changed to become more effective for treatment.
I would like to get a Master’s or Doctorate in Neurological Engineering. By furthering my education this way, I will be given the opportunity to research and explore recent technologies and ways of treating neurological disorders. This experience will allow me to learn better ways to approach the treatment of these disorders as well as learn about the things that haven’t worked before and why.
I intend to continue to attend conferences and events about the advancements in this field, such as the Brain Health and Performance Summit or the Brain Health Hackathon for example. Attending these events will allow me to work with other groups of people that will expose me to unique ways of thinking and approaching problems. Reading scientific articles about other knowledge people in my field and related fields have uncovered and expanded upon will allow me to learn more in an informal manner.
Lifelong learning is an important part of my career, and my life. I will continue learning to help improve our society and help those in need, and I intend to use the knowledge I have gained in my studies of neuroscience and engineering to educate others on the topics and implement changes for the better.
