What is Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering (FABE)?

FABE is an engineering discipline that focuses on many different departments. FABE students have a wide range of knowledge, from mechanical engineering to ecological engineering and everything in between. This major allows students to learn a broad range of material and apply it in which ever way it fits bests with their passions and interests.

Due to my interests in prosthetics and assistive technology, I knew I would need a degree that would allow me to dip into many disciplines. Through advanced biology courses and technical electives, I have been able to gain experience in anatomy and physiology, mechanical engineering, and product design. These courses, along with many others, will enable me to pursue graduate school and a career in numerous fields.

The FABE capstone courses have also contributed tremendously to my problem solving and design skills. Currently, I am working on a project that will provide an assistive technology for farmers with disabilities to enable them to enter and exit their skid loaders. Capstone has allowed me to work with industry professionals to deliver a product that will actually come to market. It has also provided the opportunity to present my findings at a national conference and receive feedback from the population it will impact. Through this project, I have gained a greater insight into prosthetic use and modifications for physical disabilities that will help me create innovative designs to further increase quality of life.
