Module 7

One of the most useful thing I’ve learned in this module was using tool to eliminate distractions. As students, there’s always an urge to check your phone, respond to texts, watch movies. The time you’ve wasted on your phone accumulates and that may even discourage you from studying in the future. Using tools to eliminate online distractions such as “freedom” “self control” and “cold turkey” are great ways to manage distractions.

One specific example from this module that was put into practice was using one of the tools to sustain motivation. I used “tomato timer”, this site helped me focus on my studying and also allowed short breaks which I would scroll through my phone and clear my head before resuming again. This tool was effective in doing what it was intended to do.

One idea from this module I could put into practice in the future is follow tips for falling asleep. I sleep pretty late on school nights, which I know isn’t good, I’m not getting the recommended hours. I plan to create a nighttime routine so that I can sleep better and function even better the following day.

One advice I would give to students is to find ways to manage your stress and prioritize your mental health. School and work can be overwhelming so try to set aside time for yourself.

Module 6

One of the most useful thing I’ve learned in this module is the way in which to search for information in search engines, called the Boolean Logic. Often times we type a bunch of words or even sentence expecting for search engines to generate lots of information. However, typing in a few key words generates more information. I think it’s very helpful to learn this moving forward.

One specific example of something from this module put into practice was identifying a research question, using search strategies and then evaluating them based upon reliability, quality and utility. It worked out pretty well. Finding a reliable and creditable source took some time.

One idea from this module I could put into practice in the future is using university library or google scholar to have a creditable source instead of simply typing it in search engines. These sources provide well written articles from creditable authors. Another idea from this module I could use is searching for tips to improve on strengthening your writing.

One tip I would give for students based on what I’ve read there are lots of thought put into research questions and different sources that can back up your question. However, be very careful on where you find your sources, because there are lots of site that are biased.

Module 5

One of the most useful things I’ve learned in this module was the different ways of note methods. I have always used the outline method just because I’ve gotten so use to it in my everyday academic life, that I never even tried to use other methods like Cornell, mind map, flow and write on the slides method. Another useful thing I’ve learned active listening,

One specific example for this module was the “American History” note taking. I chose to use outline, because I know that it worked well for me and helped me to better memorize and organize main points.

One idea that I found interesting from the video was writing down a brief summary of bullet points. Instead of just writing down key point and concepts, summarizing allows me to put all the important information together, that would also allow me to grasp the topic. Another idea from this module is to record lectures, if possible. This would allow me to repeat the audio as many time as I like

One advice I would give students is to try to explore other methods of note taking. Perhaps the current note taking method you’re using right now isn’t effective. Exploring other methods could help you better prepare for exams.

Module 4

One of the most useful thing that I’ve learned in this module is the method for strategic memory learning / studying. There are different ways for studying strategies to help you retain information that you’ve learned.

One specific example of something from this module that was put into place was mind mapping. This tool is effective in increasing and improving memory because the diagram is a visual outline that organizes ideas that is understood in an easy way. It worked out pretty well. I was studying for an exam this week and created a mind map to help me memorize concepts.

One idea I could put in to practice in the future is the way I study for exams, for example highlighting what key concepts are the most important. I sometimes find myself highlighting nearly everything I write down, which really isn’t helpful. Another idea I want to implement in the future is multitasking. There are times where I like to play music while doing my assignments and listening to music does interrupt and distract me from doing my work. Eliminating any disturbance will help me focus on the task at hand.

One advice I would give students is creating learning tools such as mindmaps, timelines, info graphs that will help with you comprehend concepts in an easy and fast visual format. Another advice I would give students is to only highlight important information to connect important concepts. Highlighting the entire note defeats the purpose of highlight. So, make sure you pick out important ideas.

Module 3

The most useful thing I’ve learnt from this module was ways you can beat procrastination. As someone who is busy with school and work, I found this technique very helpful. Sometimes when I feel overwhelmed with work, I stress about the assignment and its due date which causes me to procrastinate. Another reason why I sometimes procrastinate is because I know I am capable of completing the work, so I do it when it’s near the due date. One technique is recognizing the pattern and find ways to avoid or break that pattern.

A specific example from this module is creating a calendar to not only better manage my time but also list out the tasks that needs to be completed for that week. It worked out pretty well for me. I wrote down my schedule / task in a planner and crossed out everything that I’ve accomplished.

In the future, I plan on better controlling how I spend my free time. For example, on Sunday nights, I usually watch Netflix up until midnight sometimes even as late as 1am. So, cutting back on how much time I spend watching shows is something I plan on implementing in the future.

One advice I would give students is to create a planner / calendar for that week. Not just for academics but also personal. Students usually get overwhelmed by the number of tasks that needs to be done that week, so make sure you write down and include a fun activity, that way you can look forward to something at the end of the week. Having a schedule allows you to stay organized and set specific deadlines to stay on track. I also like to include that, sometimes you might even be ahead of schedule and that allows you even more free time.

Module 2 Reflection

One of the most useful thing I’ve learned from this module was about group communication. I think this was an interesting read because it’s important to have a clear communication when working with your peers. You have a big responsibility in contributing to group work and addressing any problems, questions and concerns. I also think that communicating allows for room for critical thinking. In addition, being a great communicator influences fellow classmates and motivates them to achieve their goal.

One example put into practice was responding to discussion post. I think that’s a great way in displaying group communication because it helps classmates improve on areas they can work on by giving feedbacks.

One idea I could put into practice is learning how to email professors for any questions I may have regarding lecture material. I usually refrain from asking question because I’m pretty shy. Emailing professors is an effective way in communicating and is part of the learning process.

One advice I would give to students is to remain consistent in communicating with your classmates online because it shows that you are willing to work together and not only getting the work done but also helps form a good habit.
