Year in Review

My first semester here at Ohio State has taught me so much about myself. Before this experience, I was a caged bird used exceeding in school as well as having free time. In college, however, I have found my time to be much more scarce and thereby more valuable. I am proud of myself for making it this far, but I intend to become even more serious about my studies next semester. My ultimate goal is medical school, and to succeed here, I must keep that as my biggest priority. I am finding that I enjoy the lifestyle here and I will do what I can to excel.

Artifacts

I grew up in a family that values travel as if it is a precious heirloom, passed from parent to child. Over the summer of 2016, I embarked on an incredibly special journey halfway across the world to Italia, a country with a culture and spirit incomparable to any other. Italia gave me the emotional strength and maturity I spent so long searching for, in addition to exposing me to the most hospitable, loving, and kind people on earth.

Some might say that they found what they were looking for in the food, in the museums, in the architecture… but it was different for me. I found myself in the graffiti, in the cracks between the sidewalk sprouting tiny flowers, in the bellowing cello music on the streets, in the gravel leading up to Mount Vesuvius. I could tuck myself into an ancient aqueduct and disappear for a minute, yet emerge into a city that missed me while I was gone, opening its arms and inviting me home. There are no words to encapsulate that feeling.

Have you ever seen a movie and wondered to yourself, could there be such a place on this planet? I watched Roman Holiday more times than I care to admit, and wondered that for a long time. Let me tell you, I found the answer to be yes. Of course, time has worn away bits of what once was, but Italia has this indescribable habit of recreating itself with every wave of transformation. In those moments, in those weeks, I was transformed, too, rebuilding myself from the ruins I found myself to be. It sounds cliche, but even the tour guides expressed such a deep-rooted love for the land their ancestors gave life to. In a sense, that passion gave me life, as well, shining a spotlight on the darkest corners of my heart. It was more than seeing paintings or statues; it was understanding the life behind the art and how many lives it impacted.

One of the most popular tourist sites in Roma, better known as Rome, is Fontana di Trevi, or the Trevi Fountain. The tradition is to make three wishes, and throw coins in the fountain for the wishes to come true. While I cannot expose my exact wishes, my heart felt mature and content feeling that it was no longer material satisfaction I wished for, but rather emotional catharsis. The mere act of tossing my coins into a mix of a million people’s wishes felt like a dream, a release that reminded me of the life I had failed to appreciate.

Venezia, or Venice, is the famous city along the water. I remember stepping off the boat with no clue what the city had in store for me. Venezia shocked me. It was so, so much more than just a series of building on green-hued water. The water taxis rested on streams that extended like veins throughout the city, branching off into the limbs of Italia. At one point during our gondola ride (pictured below), I glanced up at the balcony facing the water and noticed a woman smoking a cigarette. In that moment, I was reminded of the stories behind each face I passed on my trip. I thought about her life, what brought her to Venezia, and it encouraged me to think of the paths we take that lead us to where we end up.

I picture myself living in Italia someday, in an apartment above the town squares in Firenze (Florence). I see myself learning Italian, finding my place in an entirely new world and recreating myself in that world. Something about the weeks I spent in Italia made me a fuller person, happier with myself and the life around me. I wish for everyone to experience that joy and freedom of being in a place that sweeps you off your feet and kisses you with milk and honey. I fell in love with Italia, with the stars in the sky and the bricks paving the road. The only place to go from here is up.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness

I hope to become globally aware in the ever-changing world by participating in some type of exchange program. Perhaps a study abroad would be a good fit for someone like me, as I take great interest in learning the languages and customs of other cultures. I have always dreamed of studying in a place like Italy (see my Artifacts for an explanation), but I am aware that there are innumerable other locations that would benefit from having students with medical knowledge. For that reason, I am trying to keep an open mind and exploring my options before I jump into my global adventure.

Original Inquiry

Particularly after my upperclassmen interview, I began to think realistically about what kind of “inquiry” is right for me. I can picture myself working in a lab, eventually doing research with a professor, but I can also see myself taking a year off between second and third year medical school to work on an independent project. With that in mind, Ohio State is a great place to start. Once I gain experience and find an option that appeals to me, I hope to prove to myself and to others that I am capable of accurately and independently working in a professional setting.

Academic Enrichment

It is not much of a challenge to be enriched by the rigorous freshman courses, but I can feel that I am on the path to challenging myself in the best ways possible. Even the class sizes– which, at up to 700, are a large jump from my high school average of 25– have encouraged me to find and make my place. The sheer exposure to so many brilliant minds has reminded me that I am one of so many eager-to-learn students, and I will have to work to separate myself. While this can be intimidating, I know that I have plenty of resources available to ease the transition.

Leadership

I am already involved with a bit of leadership as an Events Chair of Ohio State’s Pakistani American Student Association. I hope that this will help teach me disciplinary skills and teamwork so that I may branch out into other, potentially bigger leadership positions. I grew up being the leader of the pack, often taking control in group projects and leading Student Government and the National Honors Society, so I hope that I will gain opportunities to develop and build on these past experiences.

Service

As many of my fellow Scholars, service has been an important part of my upbringing. Whether it be giving back to the community through volunteering at a soup kitchen, or organizing an actual project to benefit one specific local group, I have found myself learning a lot from service. I have already heard about so many wonderful opportunities to volunteer here at OSU, from simply beautifying the campus to traveling around Columbus in search of a place in need. I would love to work with children in some capacity, and am keeping an eye out for a volunteer opportunity that can fill that aim.

Commentary on my G.O.A.L.S.

Aside from my apparent love for science, I chose the Biological Sciences Scholars program at The Ohio State University because I knew that it would help me in achieving my long-term goal of becoming a child and adolescent psychiatrist. From a young age, I learned the consequence of untreated or misdiagnosed mental illness in children, and thereby developed a burning desire to be part of the solution. Since then, I have spent two years performing independent psychological research through a program at my high school, and I plan to continue that path through undergraduate research. This ties well to the Original Inquiry part of G.O.A.L.S., as I was asked to pose and eventually answer my own questions through research. I would love to work in a laboratory on or near campus where I am able to learn from experienced mentors. This would not only give me a strong sense for what I wish to do in the future, but also provide me with a more realistic view of research. Scholars must view the world through a lens that advocates independence and initiative, and I am eager to expand that aspect of myself.

Another G.O.A.L.S. objective I relate well to is the Academic Enrichment sector. While social work and volunteering play an instrumental role in having a positive impact on the world, the first aspect most medical schools attend to is academics. In addition to a superior MCAT score, an impressive GPA and substantial credit hours are important to impressing any institution. Throughout grade school, I did well without having to invest too much time in studying or time management. University life thus far, however, challenged that– and I am glad it did. I am far more dedicated to my studies, and I feel that I am earning the grades I deserve. A good work ethic is the foundation for academic success, so I hope to prove that I am willing to work hard for success. This will help further my long term goals by allowing me to develop patience and persistence, which is crucial to being a respected physician. I hope to use the G.O.A.L.S. as a guide for success in the years to come.

About Me

img_8504

Welcome to my EPortfolio! My name is Zara Ali, and I am a biology major hoping to pursue medicine. Eventually, I aim to practice child and adolescent psychiatry. Aside from school, I love to dance, paint, and meet new people.

A year ago, I envisioned myself far from my hometown of Toledo, Ohio. But as fate would have it, my path led here, to THE Ohio State University in nearby Columbus– and I am so glad it did. This institution boasts so many opportunities regarding the biological sciences and undergraduate research, as well as a multitude of clubs and activities that appeal to me. While I have always had a passion for science, college has encouraged me to branch out into other wakes of life, including philosophy. I am eager to see where university life leads me.

From a young age, community service has been important to me. In 2014, I took part in an initiative known as Design for Change Pakistan. It encouraged the youth across Pakistan to enact problem-solving tactics for issues plaguing their communities. While my role was simple, the impact stayed with me. I discovered that my love for children extends beyond wishing to help them; I wish to empower them and assist them in developing healthy perspectives of our world. Particularly within my own culture, there is plenty of work to be done.

During these years at Ohio State, I wish to have a positive experience characterized by diversity and opportunity. I can tell that the culture here is incredibly inclusive, which is part of the reason I see it as such a perfect fit for myself. Whether in the classroom or with my Scholars program, I am surrounded by a diverse and intelligent group of students.
