Year in Review

Freshman Year:

My very first meaningful experience my Freshman year probably occurred right after the first floor meeting where I began really getting to know all the people on my floor and then meeting people on other floors as well. Being a freshman this type of experience in a dorm was new and exciting at the time and made a great start for an awesome year.

Another meaningful experience happening the Spring semester when me and my group mates for engineering stayed up til 3 am working on a project. Then we decided, in our delirium, that we should see a movie to celebrate and for some reason thought the AMC Lennox was showing movies at this time. So we walk all the way there and find out that we are too tired for our own good since the whole place is dark and closed down. But instead of going to bed since at that point we were dedicated we watched the newest Star Wars using our dorm’s biggest televisions and then got breakfast at Scott afterward. The whole time was overall mundane but was just so casual and pleasant that I’ll always remember especially because it allowed me to grow even closer to the people I spent that time with.

Sophomore Year:

At my tutoring job the amount of experiences I had with other people could be said to be wrapped all together as one big large experience. I remember many of the connections I made with people while tutoring and each one made my day overall better. So definitely being a tutor made my year go from being just okay to great.

Another great experience I had was the FLOW tree planting near the Schott which happened towards the end of the Spring semester. It was enjoyable because there was a lot of people there I knew since it was one of the last events available for GES service hours and we were all just trying to make the best of it. Also the tree planting as well was fun and rewarding too!

My Year GOALS:

1)  To find a place in the research community at The Ohio State University. In order to achieve a place in the Biomedical Engineering Community I need to gain strong experiences that can be applied and valued in the real world. This would allow me to get my foot in the door and get one step closer to actually doing something with strong purpose in the world.

2) To gain a job on campus that would further my academic experiences and maybe also professional skills. This would, like my first goal, make me a better engineer in the long run and allow me to have better chances of getting a spot I want in the Biomedical Engineering industry.

My GOALS in Review:

For my first goal I went through a couple research labs and their interview processes and was even offered positions in such labs. But I quickly found that the university lab environment was not for me and with my work load being larger than expected this goal could be said to not have been completed as well as completed at the same time. My second goal was actually achieved through gaining a job as a paid tutor at The Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center. This job has actually made me what feels to be a better person overall and I hope to stay in this job until I graduate. Additionally, this year has overall been pretty great with a few bumps here in there but overall I pulled through!

Career

Over the last two years at The Ohio State University I have gained tremendous amounts of experience inside and outside the classroom. Outside of the classroom I worked as a paid mathematics tutor and gained further interpersonal profession skills all the while discovering new ways to apply math within my life. Within the classroom the amount of knowledge and experience I have gained is almost too much to simply even list. For some examples I have become fairly proficient in using MATLAB in many ways from the many classes that used it as its main resource over the past two years. I have also gained modeling expertise in using Solidworks from my classes. Additionally from my Biology and Chemistry classes I have gained much practice in lab procedures as well as the large sums of usable knowledge in these areas.

Going into the future I hope to find a spot in the Biomedical Engineering Industry hopefully in a research and development sector. Using the skills I have gained from Ohio State I believe this hope to be closer to a reality than the dream it felt like just a few years ago.

Artifacts

In this presentation, my group and I researched multiple facets of wind turbines ranging from their history to the pros and cons of them to how they work to how efficient they can be at generating power and even researched the possibilities that lie in the future for wind turbines. This project gave myself a much greater familiarity with the technology of wind turbines and have gave me some appreciation for how efficient they already are and how much more they may become in the future. Ultimately, the largest gain from this project was seeing how other people researched wind turbines in contrast with my group which insanely gave me more appreciation in how much there is to learn about what seems to be a fairly simple piece of technology.

Sophomore Year Accomplishment:

During the past year I gained employment in The Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center as a paid tutor. I earned this job early in the year and being a tutor has definitely changed the way I work and live on campus through making connections with students  I helped as well as the other tutors I worked with over the year.

About Me

My name is Kevin Albers, and I am a first year student at The Ohio State University and am pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Before I came here, I attended St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio, and was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. At my high school, I was heavily involved in the National Honors Society and was part of multiple clubs such as Stage Crew, Linguistics Club, and the Edsman, the school newspaper. Also during my years in high school I became heavily involved in the art of pottery and sculpture and by the end of my senior year one first prize in a well known arts contest.

Academically, I have always been a visual learner and have always needed to do the things I learn instead of just ‘know’ the knowledge through reading or watching videos. While there are many things that can only be thought of anything theoretically, I tend to best perform on things that are more concrete or at least visualized within my mind.  However, even so abstract subjects have also been one of my strong suits academically as well, as long as I have the foundation needed to understand it and not just ‘know’ it. Furthermore, I have always tended be a quick learner which has helped my transition into the college environment which requires quick learning if you don’t want to fall behind. My academic interests has always been highly STEM related and been focused into heavy interests in the medical fields as well as engineering fields. This is why I am attempting to pursue Biomedical Engineering which combines many of the subjects I have enjoyed most into one thing.
