The following are a list of academic tips I have composed as takeaways from both the Keys to Online Success (ESETEC2011) class and my own personal academic experience through college:
- Manage your time wisely. Plan ahead by using a weekly and working your day around a daily to-do-list.
- Keep your motivation high! Always remember to reward yourself for the progress you have made after reaching goals.
- Set GOALS. However, make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T, that is, specific, measureable, attainable, realistic and time-bound!
- Manage your environment well! When you need a place to study, the best choice is one that removes you from distraction whether it be the library or an empty classroom.
- Find time to RELAX. After working so hard, you should find the time to treat your mental and physical health either through Netflix, exercise, or other outlets.
- If you have a question or do not know something, do not be afraid to ASK for help! There are plenty of resources to take advantage of if you just ask.
- COMMUNICATION is a necessity in the academic sphere. Professors and other peers are great sources of information for any and all gaps in lecture material!
- When in doubt, JUST CITE IT, and don’t risk plagiarizing it! It is always important to give credit where it is due when the idea is not original or your own.
- Find a note taking system that works BEST for YOU. Graphic models, outlines, or audio recordings are just some of the many various ways to take notes to promote active learning.
- ADAPT. Get comfortable with using both digital and hardcopy resources depending upon class structure. Similar note-taking strategies and active-reading methods apply to both!
I hope these tips find you well! Your education reflects the effort you put forth. Thus, make the best of every situation and seize all opportunities that may come your way! Good luck!
