Workday Tip: Time Off and Leave Overview

Workday Absence consists of both time off and leaves of absence. Employees and managers may request time off and leaves of absence from the Workday Absence calendar. A time off request is typically approved by a manager for a short-term absence. A leave of absence request is typically for a longer period of time and most are approved by central human resources staff.

If an employee is absent from work for over 30 days, they must be on a leave of absence in Workday. However, some leaves of absence, such as family medical leave, may be shorter than 30 days.

Employees on a leave of absence (except faculty professional leave) must still enter paid or unpaid time off for that time. For example, an employee may be on a Family & Medical Leave (FMLA) leave of absence in Workday. The employee may be using parental time off and sick time off to receive pay during that time. In order to receive pay, the parental and sick time must be requested and approved in Workday.
