Artifacts

An artifact that has been significant to me during my first semester at Ohio State is my necklace. It was a gift from my best friend back in North Carolina on my eighteenth birthday and I wear it just about everyday. The necklace represents a sense of stability and familiarity for me, which is much needed with me being so far away from home. Moving to a new state nine hours away from home was was the hardest thing I have had to do, not to mention the challenging course load that college level classes brings. Nothing felt familiar and everything was different, I did not know anyone and was the only person from my school to come to OSU. The campus is very big, and I have felt lost many times throughout my first semester trying to balance the many things that have been going on. There have been times throughout the semester that I have felt alone with nobody to rely on, and there were many times where I wanted to fly home and never leave the familiar faces that I had left behind in August. However, something that was old and familiar that enabled me to keep pushing was my necklace. It reminded me of the love and happiness that I share with my best friend, and made me feel closer to him even though we were hundreds of miles apart. The necklace feels familiar and every time I get overwhelmed with the stress of college life or miss home, I just look at my necklace and feel calmer. The necklace also made me feel closer to home and created a sense of stability when midterms came around. I wear the necklace to all of my exams because I am reminded that there are people who believe in me and believe I can succeed, even when I may think otherwise. Although I am far away from home, I am a firm believer in the familiar saying, “home is where the heart is,” and my heart belongs to the the people I love, and my necklace signifies the people closest to my heart. My necklace is starting to wear down, there are signs of rust around the chain, but I believe that this is just evidence of all that my necklace can endure. My necklace has helped keep me strong, and I will continue to remind myself of all the people closest to me.

About Me

fullsizerender-4

My name is Shreeva Adhikari, and I was born in Kathmandu, Nepal. I moved to the United Stated at the early age of six and ever since then, I have lived in America. I have moved around various states including, New York, Minnesota, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina. I finished my last three years of high School at Panther Creek High School in North Carolina. I chose The Ohio State University because I realized that with it being such a big university, it would provide me with many opportunities. I’m currently a Biochemistry major with a pre-med track, but I’m hoping to change my major to Public Health because that has interested me more than what I’m currently majoring in. I’m currently in the International Affairs Scholars program and by the end of the semester, I plan to become a honors student as well. I would love to get involved with research and join various organizations that are focused on service and helping those who are in need.

During high school, the most meaningful experience I had was definitely going back to Nepal and volunteering over one summer. I was fortunate enough to be able to work with young elementary school students and teach them English. Along with helping the students, being able to work at a medical camp in rural Nepal was very enlightening because it allowed me to foresee that being a doctor and helping the ones in need is what I want to do with my life. I know I want to make a difference in the world, and want to leave an impact and help the ones in need. Even though I will not be able to “save” the world, I want to be able to save individual people whom are living in it. I want to be able to provide them with a happy, healthy life, and leave them better off than they were before they came in contact with me. I came to The Ohio State University hoping to accomplish that dream for providing service to others and excelling as a student and hopefully joining their medical school after my undergraduate education.

I love traveling and I would love to travel the world throughout my lifetime. While at OSU, I plan on studying abroad and exploring many new cultures and cities. I love trying new things, and for example, while in Nepal I went paragliding and it was one of the best experiences in my life. During the next four years, I plan on bungee-jumping, white water rafting, skydiving, and many more adrenaline seekers!

All in all, I plan on taking advantage of all the opportunities that The Ohio State provides and become more involved, service orientated and travel to different countries to help the ones in need, while at the same time excelling as a student.
