Spring Tag-In Saturday, May 1

Spring tag-in will take place on Saturday, May 1 at the Adams County Fairgrounds. Feeder calves will tag from 8 a.m. – 12 noon.  Feeder calf exhibitors should bring a completed feeder calf vaccination record which was emailed and can be found here or have the fair vet administer the required vaccinations at tag-in.  The fair vet will be on site to provide vaccinations/castrations for feeder calves. Exhibitors are responsible for vet fees.

Market Goats will tag from 8 – 10 a.m. and Market Lambs from 10 – 11 a.m. Goat and lamb exhibitors will enter the Larry Ave gate and be weighed and tagged at the Small Animal barns.  This will cut down on congestion on the upper end of the fairgrounds and allow goat and sheep exhibitors to park closer to their weigh/tagging area.  All goats and lambs must have official USDA scrapie identification at the time of tag-in, and animals with blue, slaughter-only or meat scrapie tags will not be tagged and may not be exhibited at the fair.

Each large animal exhibitor will be required to designate at least one animal in his/her name. A family can tag an additional two animals of that species per Junior Fair member as “family” animals. Each exhibitor will have access to no more than three total animals in that species at fair, including “family” animals.  Family is defined as junior fair eligible youth who are legally siblings, half-siblings or step-siblings.

OPTIONAL Market Hog Weigh-in

Market hog exhibitors wishing to compete for Production Champion at the 2021 Adams County Junior Fair should bring their market hog(s) to the fairgrounds on Saturday, April 24 between 8:30 – 10 a.m. to weigh.  This is an optional weigh in and not required to exhibit your market hog(s) at the fair.  This weight will only be used to calculate rate of gain for the production class.  It will not be used to calculate Outstanding Market Exhibitor.

All market hogs must be registered by April 15 at https://go.osu.edu/markethog21 in order to be eligible to weigh, show, and sell at the fair.

Quality Assurance Test Out Opportunity

Adams County Junior Fair is once again offering Test Out options in 2021.  This is an opportunity for youth ages 12 and up to take and pass an exam in place of attending the required annual Quality Assurance training.

Youth ages 12-14 years old who pass the QA test can test out of their annual QA program for up to three (3) years. At the age of 15 as of January 1, current year, youth must then take the 15-18 year old test.  Youth ages 15-18 years old who pass the QA test can test out of their annual QA program permanently.  These ages are as of January 1, 2021 – a youth’s 4-H age.  In order to pass the test, members must score a 70% or higher.

Tests are scheduled to be administered in the high school ag room at the following:

North Adams High School – Wednesday, March 31 at 2:15 p.m.

Manchester High School – Friday, April 2 at 2:45 p.m.

West Union High School – Monday, April 19 at 2 p.m.

Peebles High School – Tuesday, April 20 at 2 p.m.

Students planning to take the test should be in the ag room before the scheduled time and ready to take the exam.  Youth who do not pass the exam will be required to attend a quality assurance training in order to exhibit their livestock at the 2021 Adams County Junior Fair.  If you have questions about Quality Assurance or Test Out please contact Kristy at watters.92@osu.edu.

Beef Quality Assurance Opportunity

OSU Extension Gallia County is offering a virtual beef specific quality assurance opportunity.  The Dollars and Cents of Market Projects will take a look at hot topics in the meatpacking industry and ways you can affect the resale value of your market animal.
On April 6, 2021 at 6:00 PM Dr. Steve Boyles and Dr. Lyda Garcia will be conducting this special online QA training. The training will specifically address issues with beef care and handling. The workshop is open to any 4-H or FFA member ages 12 and up, however members under the age of 14 will be required to have an adult participate in the training with them. Market Hog Tags Available

Official Adams County Fair market hog ear tags may be picked up at the Extension Office during regular business hours beginning Monday, March 8. The office is open by appointment on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  Please call the office at 937-544-2339 to schedule pick up of tags.  If you call ahead to make prior arrangements tags can be picked up on Wednesday or Friday during regular business hours.  An advisor, friend, or parent may pick up forms and tags. You do not have to pick them up yourself.

The possession deadline for market hogs is April 15. Again in 2021 exhibitors will submit their pictures and information using an electronic form.  The form located at https://go.osu.edu/markethog21 asks for information regarding identification, possession, age and photographs of your animal and should be completed in its entirety by April 15.

When tagging your market hog, please be sure the button goes on the inside of the hog’s ear with the tag on the back side.  Please tag the animal’s left ear.

We will also be distributing the ractopamine free affidavit for producers and exhibitors.  If you purchase your market hogs, please be sure to have this form completed by the breeder.  You will submit the ractopamine free affidavit at fair check in on Monday morning of the fair.  These forms can be found at adams.osu.edu as well.

 

Adams County Jr Fair Quality Assurance Dates

Youth planning to show livestock at the 2021 Adams County Jr Fair or Ohio State Fair must complete Assuring Quality Care of Animals training or test out no later than 45 days before the start of exhibition.  This year we are offering virtual Quality Assurance training via Zoom on several dates and a limited number of in-person trainings.  Pre-registration is required for all Zoom and  In-Person Quality Assurance trainings.  To register visit https://go.osu.edu/21QA and select the session you plan to attend. Adams County 4-H Countywide Zoom Meeting Sunday, February 28, 3 p.m.

The Countywide 4-H Meeting will be this Sunday, February 28 at 3 p.m on Zoom. This month we will share tips and tricks to help you successfully complete your 4-H project(s).  We will also have pledges, county updates, a 4-H swag drawing for members present, and virtual recreation. Please have a piece of paper (copy, construction, cardstock, or colored) and crayons or markers to complete our community service project.

4-H Enrollment is Open!

2021 Adams County 4-H enrollment is open!  Visit oh.4honline.com to enroll for the new project year.  4-H Online has a new look this year, but appears to be more user friendly.

To log in, use your email address that is on file with the Extension office and the password you created for 4-H Online.  If you don’t remember your password, you can choose “reset password” on the home page of 4-H Online.  If you are not sure which email address you use, please contact the office.  If you have been in 4-H before, please do NOT create a new profile.  Here is a short video to help you through the process.

New for this year, if you enroll in an equine or dog project, it will automatically include the permission forms for you to sign electronically.  If you are taking a livestock project, you will still need to sign and submit a hard copy of the Adams County Junior Fair Livestock Exhibitor Agreement.

2021 Market Beef Tag-In, Saturday, January 9

The Adams County Senior Fair Board will hold Market Beef Tag-in on Saturday, January 9 from 8:30 – 10 a.m. at the fairgrounds.  All market beef projects being raised for the 2021 Adams County Junior Fair should be in line no later 10 a.m. to be tagged, weighed and tattooed.

Families attending Market Beef Tag-In should remain in their vehicles until they are at the chute.  At that time, one individual can exit the vehicle to identify animals as they cross the scales.  Masks and social distancing will be required.  Members will register their animals online at www.go.osu.edu/21MarketBeef and will receive an email confirmation including tag and weight following tag-in.  You will need to visit this link AFTER your animal is tagged to complete the required information.

Animals being identified for the Adams County Fair will be tagged, weighed, and tattooed. Animals being tagged as Adams County Born and Raised show entries will receive a special ear tag. No Born and Raised entries will be accepted after tag-in.  Youth may identify and exhibit as many as three market beef animals – steers or market heifers – for the Adams County Fair.  Each market beef exhibitor will be required to designate at least one animal in his/her name and a family can tag an additional two animals of that species per Junior Fair member as “family” animals.  Each exhibitor will have access to no more than three total animals in that species, including “family” animals. State Fair steers and heifers cannot be registered as a family animal.  Family is defined as junior fair eligible youth who are legally siblings, half-siblings or step-siblings.

Ohio State Fair: The Ohio State Fair (OSF) Beef Department is once again using EID ear tag and DNA sample protocols for identifying market beef animals for the 2021 State Fair, tentatively set for July 28 through August 8. These protocols include the use of an electronic identification (EID) ear tag that has a unique 15-digit number and a DNA sample that will be submitted for all market beef animals that exhibitors plan to enter in the 2021 Ohio State Fair Junior Market Beef show.

The DNA collection will be in the form of a hair follicle sample that will be submitted to the OSF by January 30, 2021 to meet the state fair ownership deadlines for market beef animals. Along with the DNA hair submission, each market animal’s 15-digit EID tag must also be included on the DNA packet.

No DNA samples will be collected by the Adams County Junior Fair Board. DNA packets with EID tags will be available at tag-in, and anyone wanting to identify an animal for OSF may request a packet. The OSF animal will be tagged with the EID tag, which will be also be used as its Adams County Fair tag. The owner will be responsible for collecting the DNA sample (instructions provided), completing the requested registration information on the packet, having the entry signed by an FFA advisor (for FFA entries) or the Extension Educator (for 4-H entries), and submitting their completed packet to the OSF by the January 30 deadline.
