ACEL Chair Appointed

Tracy Kitchel, Ph.D. will return to Ohio State as the Chair of the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership. Subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, Dr. Kitchel’s appointment is effective Aug. 1, 2016.

Kitchel recently served as assistant vice provost for graduate and postdoctoral affairs for the Office of Graduate Studies at the University of Missouri where he directed the campus fellowship selection process, coordinated events and graduate assistant teaching orientation, and advocated for graduate students on various committees. He also was an associate professor for the Department of Agricultural Education and Leadership in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. He was a faculty member for the Center for the Collaboration and Development of Educational Innovations and the Center for Human Dimensions in Natural Resources.

The Gold Chalk Award for excellence in graduate teaching from the University of Missouri Graduate Professional Council, the Superior Graduate Faculty Award from the University of Missouri Graduate Student Association, and the Great Plains IDEA (Interactive Distance Education Alliance) Faculty Excellence Award are among many of Dr. Kitchel’s awards and honors. Dr. Kitchel received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Ohio State University and his doctoral degree in Agricultural Education from the University of Missouri.

Upcoming Deadlines

There are a variety of applications that are due in the next few weeks. Students in the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership should look into each opportunity and submit an application if you wish to become more involved.

 

CFAES Ambassador Team
Deadline February 5, 2016 at 5pm 
The CFAES Ambassadors are a team of students who represent the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) for recruitment purposes. The team size ranges from 20 to 30 current, undergraduate students who have been selected through an application and interview process. Ambassadors are trained to provide tours of the CFAES campus as well as enhance recruitment initiatives with the “student touch.” They also have opportunities to travel and present about CFAES. The CFAES Ambassador Team recruits not only high school students, but prospective transfer and transitioning students as well.

Applicants will be notified via e-mail if they have been chosen for an interview. If selected for the first interview round, students will participate in several short interviews called Speed Interviews on February 15. The second round of interviews will include a short welcome, quiz, and traditional interview questions on February 26. Applications are available online and are due by 5pm on Friday, February 5, 2016.

 

CFAES Peer Mentors
Deadline February 5, 2016 at 5pm 
The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Peer Mentors serve as a contact person and teaching assistant to new first year students in the college. A Peer Mentor’s role is to help new first year students feel welcome into CFAES, be a source of information, and share experiences of transitioning to Ohio State. As a CFAES Peer Mentor, you will: strengthen invaluable personal, interpersonal, and leadership skills, develop a professional relationship with CFAES faculty and staff, gain teaching and mentoring experiences, add to your critical professional development skills for an enhanced resume, inspire new first year students to strive for excellence and facilitate their integration into Ohio State and CFAES. Submission Deadline: Friday, February 5th, 2016 at 5:00pm. Application, requirements, and important information can be found at: http://cfaes.osu.edu/students/campus-life/peer-mentorsQuestions? Day in the Life of a Buckeye Host (March 23, 2016)
Deadline February 7, 2016
Help FAES shine as we host high school sophomores and juniors on Wednesday, March 23 from 9 am – 3pm. High school student will shadow you for the day, as you attend class, eat in campus dining, visit RPAC, or go to a residence hall. The program encourages Rural and inner-city youth explore opportunities to overcome obstacles. Free lunch provided. The program is for one day only.

Twelve ACEL students attend AFA conference

Twelve students from the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership left today for the Agriculture Future of American (AFA) Leaders Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

AFA Leaders Conference provides support for college men and women who are preparing for careers in agriculture-related fields. Leaders Conference bridges the gap between academic, leadership and work experiences while helping students understand the impact of their decisions.

The conference also assists students in developing personal and professional skills necessary for lifelong success and provides a forum for updates and discussions on industry trends. Students are given the opportunity to network with peers and leaders in the agriculture industry as well as increase their excitement about the future of agriculture by creating awareness about career opportunities in agriculture.

The AFA Leaders Conference is a four-track program designed to offer college men and women four different personal and professional development opportunities spread across and matched to their years in college.

Jordan Bonham and Meghan Bennett, seniors in agricultural communication, served on the Student Advisory Team for the 2015 Leaders Conference. The AFA Student Advisory Team serves as organization ambassadors, assists staff in the planning and facilitation of the Leaders Conference and related events, and acts as student advisors for the organization. Additionally, AFA Student Advisory Team members assume the same responsibilities as a Campus Ambassador when it comes to the health of AFA relationships on their campus.

Stacie Seger – CFAES Outstanding Senior

Stacie Seger, of Fort Loramie, Ohio was selected as one of 20 nominees to win the Outstanding Activities Award for seniors from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University.This award recognizes students for both academic achievement and outstanding service through leadership within student organizations.

Stacie, the daughter of Ken and Janice Seger, is a graduating senior in Agricultural Communication. As an undergraduate, Stacie had a wide variety of experiences, including serving as a member of the Board of Trustees for the University, the vice president of CFAES Student Council and a CFAES ambassador.

Following graduation, Stacie will transition from working part time to full time as the communication manager for the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association. The Outstanding Senior Award was presented at the 2015 CFAES Recognition Banquet on April 16, 2015.

Megan Moorman – CFAES Outstanding Senior

Megan Moorman, of Xenia, Ohio has been selected as one of 20 nominees to win the Outstanding Seniors Award from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University. Also known as Top 20 Seniors, this award recognizes students for both academic achievement and outstanding service through leadership within student organizations.

Megan, the daughter of Dale and Jodi Moorman, is a graduating senior in Agriscience Education. Megan has been involved in the Agricultrual Education Society and Aplha Zeta Partners Agricultural Honorary. She also served as a leader in both of these groups.

Upon graduation she plans to teach high school agriculture at Westfall High School in Williamsport, Ohio. The Outstanding Seniors Award was presented at the 2015 CFAES Recognition Banquet on April 16, 2015.

Erin Williams – CFAES Outstanding Senior

Erin Williams, of McConnelsville, Ohio has been selected as one of 20 nominees to win the Outstanding Activities Award for seniors from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University. Also known as Top 20 Seniors, this award recognizes students for both academic achievement and outstanding service through leadership within student organizations.

Erin, the daughter of Kevin and Darlene Williams, is a graduating senior in Agricultural Communication. Erin was a CFAES Ambassador, president of the Buckeye Dairy Club, and served on the Recognition Banquet Steering Committee.

Upon graduation, Erin will be working for the Ameican Dairy Association Mideast in Columbus, Ohio as a communication specialist. The Outstanding Senior Award was presented at the 2015 CFAES Recognition Banquet on April 16, 2015.

Michelle King – Outstanding CFAES Senior

Michelle, the daughter of Henry and Charlene King, is a graduating senior in Community Leadership. Michelle was a member of the CFAES Ambassador Team, Alpha Sigma Upsilon sorority, Crops and Soils Club, Saddle and Sirloin, BuckeyeThon and the Ohio State Piston Club. Michelle also studied abroad in Ireland during winter break of 2012.

After graduation, Michelle will be working as a communication assistant with Cooper Farms. The Outstanding Senior Award was presented at the 2015 CFAES Recognition Banquet on April 16, 2015.

Kelly Fager – CFAES Outstanding Senior

Kelly Fager, of Wauseon, Ohio was selected as one of 20 nominees to win the Outstanding Seniors Award from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University. Also known as Top 20 Seniors, this award recognizes students for both academic achievement and outstanding service through leadership within student organizations.

Kelly Fager (Oustanding Senior)

Kelly, the daughter of Sue Ann Fager and and the late Paul Fager, is a graduating senior in Agricultural Communication. Kelly was a member of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, President of Collegiate Young Farmers, CFAES Banquet Steering Committee and an active participant in the Ohio Farm Bureau Young Agricultural Professionals.

Following graduation, she will be starting a career as a Grain Merchandiser Trainee at Consolidated Grain and Barge. The Outstanding Seniors Award was presented at the 2015 CFAES Recognition Banquet on April 16, 2015.
