Burger awarded American FFA Degree

My FFA experience in one simple word would be incredible.

Every person I have met, every contest I participated in, every chapter event I attended, and every lesson I have learned has had a huge impact on my life. During my time in FFA, I had so many amazing experiences, and I always had fun no matter what I was doing.

When I started my FFA career my freshman year of high school, I made it my goal to one day receive my American Degree. I got most of my inspiration to go for my American Degree from my grandpa. He loved hearing about all of my FFA experiences and he loved seeing the awards I had won, and seeing his face light up when I walked into the kitchen was the best feeling in the world. When he passed away in 2017, it was a hard time for my family. But I knew that he would have wanted to see me accomplish anything I tried, and I wanted to make him proud by receiving my American FFA Degree.

Only 1% of FFA members will receive this degree, and it is a huge honor to be a recipient of this degree, and I am so proud of my hard work and accomplishments. Knowing that my parents and family are so proud of me is an amazing feeling because all I ever want to do is make them proud. The National FFA Organization is just amazing, and I will always be thankful for the time I have spent in this organization. I have wonderful memories that will last a lifetime because of FFA, and I would do it all again.

News Release: Beach completes internship with Hancock County Agricultural Society

Schelby Beach, of Forest, recently completed an internship with Hancock County Agricultural Society in Findlay, Ohio.

During her internship, Beach used her communication skills to manage the organization’s social media platforms and website. In addition to building her computer and digital marketing skills, she also improved her customer service skills, as she provided community support when needed.

“Our students use their internship experiences to hone their communications skills, network with potential employers, and develop confidence in their abilities,” said Dr. Annie Specht, program manager and associate professor for agricultural communication. “These internships are more than just line items on a resume – they are opportunities for students to prepare themselves for the next phase of their professional lives.”

News Release: Augustine completes internship with Ohio State ATI

Samantha Augustine, of Loudonville, recently completed an internship with the Ohio State ATI Admissions Office in Wooster, Ohio.

During her internship, Augustine used her communication skills to assist in event planning for the incoming student orientation, organized 2019-2020 Admissions events and assisted in the management of the ATI Admissions communication plan.

News Release: Matthews completes internship with American Farm Bureau Federation

Ryan Matthews, of Leesburg, recently completed an internship with the American Farm Bureau Federation in Washington D.C.

During his internship, Matthews used his communication skills to assist in a range of projects. He worked on event planning for workshops, printing and compiling Discussion Meet competitor packets and creating a collegiate Farm Bureau handbook. He also worked on social media campaigns to encourage member engagement.

Megan Maurer, of Fort Loramie, recently completed an internship with the Ohio Beef Council in Marysville, Ohio.

During her internship, Maurer used her communication skills to assist in outreach efforts, consumer and producer marketing campaigns and event planning. She also worked on generating content for social media and both the Ohio Cattleman and The Ring publications.

Linnea Stephens, of Columbus Grove, recently completed an internship with Bayer Crop Science in Bel Air, Maryland.

During her internship, Stephens used her communication skills through videography and graphic design as she captured testimonials for specific products. She also facilitated the promotion of chemicals, seed traits, and technology to growers throughout her sales territory.

Lexie Shumaker, of Lancaster, recently completed an internship with the Ohio State Pickaway County Extension Office in Circleville, Ohio.

During her internship, Shumaker used her communication skills to assist in the development and management of several projects including “Adulting is Hard,” “Teen Cooking Matters” and “Teen Cooking Camp.” She also managed social media platforms, created content for the “Live Healthy, Live Well” blog and assited with 4-H project judging.

Kamala Sweeney, of Canal Winchester, recently completed an internship with the Ohio State Fair and Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio.

During her internship, Sweeney used her communication skills to give tours of the Ohio State Fairgrounds, represent different displays and interact with fairgoers. She also had the opportunity to present awards and announce livestock shows and other special events.

Each year Ohio Corn & Wheat offers an Collegiate Policy Academy to college student that have an interest in public policy.

As a CPA participant, you will be exposed to issues facing agriculture today. Throughout this Academy you will attend functions representing Ohio Corn & Wheat, meet influencers from across the state and nation and make contacts with professionals in the industry. In addition to these activities, students accepted into the Academy will attend the Washington D.C. Fly-In. This is an all-expense paid mission to Washington D.C. This mission gives students the opportunity to attend meetings focusing on: international trade, market development, ethanol, and so much more.

Now Open – College Scholarship Application for the 2020-2021 academic year – Priority Deadline: February 15, 2020
All students in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences are encouraged to fill out the College Scholarship Application for the 2020-21 academic year.

You will only need to fill out one application to be eligible for scholarships from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, School of Environment and Natural Resources, and ATI/Wooster. The priority deadline for completing the application is February 15, 2020.

The simple on-line form requires you to write a short 300 word essay, list of present and previous work experience, involvement in extracurricular activities, provide details about involvement in groups. Students in the School of Environment and Natural Resources will only need to complete this application for 2020-21 as the supplemental questions are within this application. Applicants who have participated in 4-H regardless of University/College, Campus, or major are to complete this application and the additional supplemental questions when you check “Yes” on the involvement in 4-H.

FAFSA Now Available for Next Year – Start Filling Out Now!
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the University Special Scholarships Application and the CFAES Scholarship Application for the 2020-2021 academic year are now available.
What you need to do now:

  • File the FAFSA today at fafsa.gov or on the myStudentAid app. The 2020-2021 FAFSA requires income information from your 2018 tax returns. Learn more at fafsa.gov
  • Follow the FAFSA prompts and use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to directly import tax return information into the FAFSA.
  • Complete the University Special Scholarships Application. For more information visit sfa.osu.edu/current-student/about-aid/types-of-aid/scholarships
  • Complete the CFAES Scholarship Application. For more information visit cfaes.osu.edu/scholarships

Make it a priority. The 2020-2021 Ohio State priority date for the FAFSA and the University Special Scholarships Application is February 1, 2020. The CFAES Scholarship Application priority date is February 15, 2020.

NCGA, BASF Accepting Applications for 2019 Scholarships
The National Corn Growers Association is again offering its William C. Berg Academic Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship thanks to the sponsorship of BASF Corporation.

Five $1,500 scholarships are available to undergraduate college students. The five scholarship winners will be invited to visit and tour a BASF facility in 2020 and meet with key staff. Dates and details of the trip are still being developed. BASF will notify the winners directly.

To apply, students or a parent/guardian must be a member of the NCGA. Past scholarship winners and employees and the families of employees of any division of BASF or their subsidiaries or the NCGA are not eligible for the scholarship. Students may apply for membership at NCGA.com. Applications must be submitted by December 1, 2019. The application is available here: http://www.ncga.com/scholarships.

Fellowships for Undergraduate STEM Students from the East Asian Studies Center

Application Deadline: Monday, February 3, 2020, 4:30 p.m. EST

These fellowships are available to undergraduate students of junior or senior standing in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field who have successfully completed two years of East Asian language study at the college level. Academic Year 2020-2021 fellowships are expected to contribute $10,000 towards tuition and fees and also provide a $5,000 stipend. Summer 2020 fellowships are expected to cover $5,000 in tuition and fees and also provide a $2,500 stipend. Subject to approval, FLAS fellowships may also be used for foreign language and area studies at other U.S. or foreign institutions. Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships
The program offers summer and academic year fellowships for students who are pursuing a degree and need advanced training in language and area studies. Fellows receive a tuition and fee credit up to $10,000 to subsidize enrollment in language and/or area studies coursework as well as receiving a stipend (up to $5,000)! Fellowships are open to students in any major who are interested in learning Portuguese, Quechua, or another language of Latin America (not including Spanish). Additional Information available here.

News Release: Coppler completes internship with National FFA Foundation

Carley Coppler, of Carey, recently completed an internship with the National FFA Foundation in Indianapolis, Indiana.

During her internship, Coppler used her communication skills to engage donors and also interviewed potential individuals to be featured in various publications. In addition to improving her communication skills, Coppler also conducted research and data analysis to strategize ways to engage prospective sponsors.
