My Ohio Farm Bureau Internship

County fairs have always had a special place in my heart. No matter where I went, every county fair was filled with the smell of fried food, children laughing and screaming on the rides, and of course, my favorite part, lots of animals. I think it is probably safe to assume that a lot of small-town people share their favorite part with me. Through 4-H and FFA, showing animals became my favorite part of the fair, and one of my favorite parts of the whole summer.

This summer was a little bit different. I spent it preparing for the fair, like I did when I was younger. However, I spent this summer preparing for the Ohio State Fair, instead of my county fair.  Instead of rationing feed, walking and washing animals, and cleaning the tack, I helped plan out the Ag & Hort Building at the 2015 Ohio State Fair.

Luckily, I worked on a team with two other interns. We gathered ideas from Agro-Culture Liquid’s IQ Hub in Michigan, Lucky Ladd Farms in Tennessee, and from GROW Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. We wanted to provide an interactive, agricultural exhibit that would teach youth about the vast agriculture industry.

My internship encompassed some public relations work, graphic design, event planning and social media, and so much more. Ohio Farm Bureau gave me a chance to teach others about the agriculture industry, but I also learned a lot about it as well.  Our entire summer of planning was put to the test during the 12 days of the Ohio State Fair, but it was the fair that pushed me to my limits and showed me everything that I was capable of doing. Years ago, the county fair taught me that I might have a place in agriculture, but this summer, the state fair taught me that I can grow a career in it.

Experience OSU for a Day Hosts Needed

Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The “Experience OSU for a Day” (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit.

EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to see various classrooms, the Oval, the Union, a room in Norton House, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow). To sign up, simply fill out the form at http://go.osu.edu/eofd-hosts. If you have questions, feel free to contact Gary Klopfenstein atklopfenstein.40s@osu.edu.

Recognition Banquet Committee Applications Available
Every year students across CFAES campus come together in the spring to recognize all that our college has accomplished at our annual College Recognition Banquet. This recognition program would not be possible without the help of students like you who come together to plan and prepare this banquet.

There are six sub committees to apply for: atmosphere and ambience, food and menu, production, program, public relations and soliciations. To apply, visit go.osu.edu/steering-committee-application to access the application. Any questions can be directed to co-chairs Daniel Grayless or Ryan Alu. The application deadline is October 9, 2015 at 5pm.

Logo Design Contest
In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Smith-Hughes Act, the National Council for Agricultural Education is announcing a logo design contest.  This contest is open to students currently enrolled in K-12 and post-secondary agricultural education and related programs (e.g. agricultural communications, agricultural leadership) with cash prizes provided for the top three designs ($500, $300, & $200).
Please use the attached announcement with interactive link to encourage your students to submit entries as either individuals or design teams.  Full contest rules and guidelines can be found on The Council’s website.
