December 2019/January 2020 Advisors of the Month

Check out some of the wonderful things our advising colleagues have done this past month! Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

Emily Carpenter Following the flooding in the Hagerty Hall Advising Office, I don’t know what we would have done without Emily! Emily worked quickly to find us all temporary office locations, and made sure we had the technology and other resources we needed. She was on top of everything. Even now that we’re all in separate offices, she always makes a point to check in on us and ask if we need anything. She deserves a Supervisor of the Year award!
Julianne Hensel Julianne is managing many aspects of various honors applications currently happening in Fisher College of Business. Her Qualtrics and Excel skills are very helpful in making the application process for students and the review process for staff and faculty run smoothly!
Alissa Kasmer Alissa has got to be hands down the best advising resource I have encountered in my time at OSU. If she doesn’t know an answer, she knows who to ask to find an answer. She’s helped me navigate many complicated situations and is an excellent sounding board. She works hard for her students and her department and I know that even though they don’t say it often, they are incredibly thankful for her and I am too.
Shalonda Makupson-Tilford Shalonda cares deeply for her students and makes sure each student is seen, heard, and supported. We are lucky to have you as a part of our team.
Alexis McDonagh Alexis started in our office in October and began seeing student on her own in January. She’s doing an amazing job learning all of Ohio State’s policies, resources, and petitions, as well as the requirements for psychology and various other pre-health programs. She also did over 30 major declaration appointments in January! She’s a great addition to the team.
Ryan Mouncey Ryan is a great addition to our advising team! He started during the chaos of the 2nd week of fall semester so he had to hit the ground running, and he did so with a great attitude. Not only is he doing his job well but he is stepping up and helping out with other tasks as needed. One recent example is from this winter break when he helped with grade/record reviews for some colleagues out on leave. This can be a very onerous and mind-numbing task, particularly after having already spent days reviewing hundreds of your own advisee’s records. Despite knowing this, Ryan didn’t hesitate to volunteer and help his colleague out. He is a great team player and we are thrilled to have him.
Rick Stewart Rick is an advisor who is not only attentive to the needs of his students but also the needs of the advising area. His organizational skills and attention to details have contributed to successful initiatives he has led. His sincere respect and inclusiveness of all perspectives has been refreshing. Since we have been short staffed in the advising area at the Mansfield campus, Rick’s willingness to provide assistance above and beyond has been so helpful. He is usually seen in his office after 5 pm, typically one of the last staff members to leave. Thanks, Rick, for your awesome teamwork and support. You will be greatly missed when you retire at the end of spring semester.
Louise Vasher Louise has been a wonderful addition to Fisher not only for students but also for the whole office. She always comes to work with a smile and a positive attitude. She cares deeply for her students and knows all about their backgrounds. When she meets with students, they know she is truly listening their concerns and frustrations. We are lucky to have her!
Athena Yiamouyiannis Athena has great managerial skills that she used to streamline math advising, allowing each team member to use their best abilities.
She was also instrumental in making the office change happen during the Autumn ’19 term, in spite of all the challenges that came during the busiest term of the year.
Athena coordinated the hiring of three new math advisors, and helped built an awesome team: “The Five Math-keteers” as I dare titled us :- )

The winners of this month’s ACADAOS raffle are… Alissa Kasmer and Rick Stewart! Congratulations!

November 2019 Advisor of the Month

Check out some of the wonderful things our advising colleagues have done this past month! Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

Rodica Barbu Senior Math Advisor Rodica Barbu has served as an excellent role model and mentor for our new Math Advising staff members. Rodica has been described as an “office encyclopedia” for her knowledge of policy changes and procedures and is more than happy to share that information with those searching for answers. Rodica is a dedicated professional and has assumed additional duties as leader on Math Transfer Credit evaluations, Honors Math students and more! Math Advising greatly appreciates Rodica’s positive attitude and helpfulness, particularly during the busy times.
Melissa Basford Melissa is always willing to go above and beyond in order to help students and fellow advisors. Melissa volunteered to help a new transfer student today who came very late for orientation. Melissa was very patient with her and spent the time needed to help her schedule appropriate classes for Spring Semester. The student really appreciated Melissa’s positive attitude and her help in scheduling classes. Melissa is an A++++ advisor and she is very deserving of being selected as the ACADAOS advisor of the month. Melissa is an exceptional advisor and a wonderful and very supportive advising colleague!
Sean Boley Sean as done an awesome job becoming the Manager of advising over the last year or so. He has pushed us forward as an office and has implemented many beneficial practices in the office. He takes time out of the day to talk to each advisor to see how we are doing and asks if there is anything we need. He is a great manager and role model!
The Exploration Advising Team I am nominating all of the advisors in the Exploration advising office because they consistently go above and beyond to provide outstanding advising and to put students first. As a team, everyone pitches in to support one another as we work to provide excellent advising and serve students at Ohio State.
Matt Moore-Waitkus Matt is a wonderful co-worker. He’s a great sounding board and shows support when needed – I always value his experience, perspective, and advice! I’m grateful to work with him!
Hillary Stanley Hillary has worked so hard to come up with new processes and procedures around a lot of our initiatives. She re-imagined our orientation day in a way that was so beneficial to all involved. She also oversees all of the College wide advising initiatives and always goes above and beyond for all of our staff, students and faculty.

The winners of this month’s ACADAOS raffle are… Sean Boley and Hillary Stanley! Congratulations!

October 2019 Advisor of the Month

Check out some of the wonderful things our advising colleagues have done this month! Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

Meg Downing Meg has taken on a lot this semester with helping to coordinate our 3 large survey sections and making sure everything is running smoothly with the schedules for the sections and making sure we are all on the same page as instructors. She has also been a wonderful support as always in advising and helping to make sure that student needs and concerns are taken care of and helping with my many questions when it has come to some more complicated petition situations.
Liz McGinnis Liz is our person for creating updates to the website. She usually has a turn-around time for the needed updates of a day or less. Often she must complete multiple updates in a single week. Her quick response to meet the needs of the office, keeping all of our information up to date is greatly appreciated. Basically, she rocks!
Angie Lecount Melamed Angie is patient and thorough in handling a very large roster of Biochem majors. In addition, she helped me out in October by trading Monday morning Walk-ins to accommodate an unexpected conflict. She also helped us run special 10th Friday Walk-ins, and does a great job talking to prospective Chem & Biochem majors at the NMS Overview Sessions.
Leah Schuh Leah does an incredible job of helping our new first year, transfer, and campus change students adjust to Columbus campus. She organizes our orientation and survey courses to help students seamlessly transition into their first semester at Ohio State. She also provides tremendous support to her colleagues so that we can advise our students effectively. She is the definition of a team player and adds so much to the EHE undergraduate student services office.
Jeremy Swisher Jeremy is an absolute rock star! He is an exceptional academic advisor and a supportive coworker. I’m so glad that he is part of our team! =)
Laura Whitaker Laura has taken on a lot during autumn semester. However, her attitude toward the extra commitment is awesome! Recently in a meeting her comment was, “it needed done, I just did it.” This says it all. I went to update a form for spring semester and she had already done the update. In short, she rocks!
Alison Baker, Laura Whitaker, & Alisa Paulsen The psychology office has been CRAZY this semester since we’re down two advisors and, more recently, our front desk administrator. I am so impressed by and thankful for our team and the ways in which we have all stepped up to support one another. Alisa is now managing our desk and Laura and Alison in spite of having fully booked calendars until December (that’s right) AND regularly seeing 12-13 students during our drop-ins (3 times a week now for 2 hours) are positive and able to laugh about it. You all rock.

The winners of this month’s ACADAOS raffle are… Meg Downing and Angie Lecount Melamed! Congratulations!

September 2019 Advisor of the Month

Nadia Barksdale She’s an exceptional advisor who goes the extra mile to also be a great colleague.
Katie Bush Katie has done a great job of helping develop the ACADAOS mentorship program this semester, work on the professional development committee, and Autumn Advising Conference planning committee. Katie is a constant resource for new advisors to learn from and grow as professionals.
Nancy Coscia Nancy has been a great leader for the ACADAOS professional development committee. Through her leadership, she has ensured the 2019-2020 professional development for ACADAOS was solidified well before the academic year began. Nancy is a constant support to her committee and is open to ideas as they arise. Nancy has also had some role transition within her department and has truly given it her all.
Niki Jaburek Niki is a shining example of an advisor that goes above and beyond her job responsibilities. She is continuously improving and honing her skills as an advisor, as well as, improving the peer mentor program in her department and participating on multiple committees for ACADAOS. Her organizational skills are admirable and her OnCourse knowledge extremely helpful and valuable.
Lisa Jerele Lisa is an amazing co-worker and advisor. She’s stepped up in so many areas including advising student athletes, and she did a tremendous job planning our Open House. Her support and guidance has been so helpful this year. We really appreciate all of the hard work and dedication she has towards students and our department!
Kim Tackett Kim is so passionate about her work with students. She strives to make her students feel comfortable and supported in Survey class, so much so that she offers high fives to all of her students as they enter her classroom. She goes out of her way to ensure students feel like they are more than just a number. Kim also challenges her students to think critically and reflect on choices when met with obstacles. Even with a large advising roster, she reaches out to students individually to check in on things and follow up when needed. Kim truly cares about her students being successful and goes out of her way to show them that even though the university is large, students can still build a one-on-one connection with university staff members.
Kami Westhoff This semester, Kami coordinated the freshman Survey course, our Peer Mentor program, and was instrumental in the hiring of work study students for our office. All of this is in addition to advising her students which she always does with great care and compassion. Thank you, Kami!

The winners of this month’s ACADAOS raffle are… Kim Tackett and Kami Westhoff! Congratulations!

Thank you Lori Schleeter, Deborah Barton, Wendy Hedrick, Marissa Snyder, Karen Meyer, and Courtney Roeder for “stepping up to the plate” and knocking the tasks out of the park. I appreciate it and our campus does as well!

Karen is a great source of knowledge, help, and patience when it comes to helping the Arts and Sciences advisors set up Carmen for the Arts and Sciences freshman survey classes. She provided a lot of help for me in regards to setting up Carmen for my survey class, and I am very grateful to Karen for the help and reassurance she provided me. She also provided extra help for the BIO SCI advisors during many of the BIO SCI Day 1 orientation sessions during the summer. It was great to have Karen there to assist with the questions after the Day 1 academic planning session.
