June-October 2022 Advisors of the Month

It’s been a while since the last Advisor of the Month post, but advisors and other staff continue to do great work across campus all months of the year. Here are just some examples of what that has looked like. Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

  • Meg Downing
    • Meg has been a wonderful resource and go-to person for all questions related to degree audit exceptions and GEN. She is always quick to reply to email questions and even will pause in her own work to answer instant message questions in the moment. Thanks Meg for being you. You ROCK!”
  • Cecilia Johnson
    • Cecilia worked to help an international student who had a family tragedy and was not enrolled in any classes Week 1 to enroll full-time by the end of Week 2. The student has a double-major and was emailing two advisors at one time. Cecilia was wonderful in keeping both advisors and the student updated on the progress and plan for autumn. Thanks Cecilia!”
  • Heather Kerr
    • Heather worked with new international students over summer enrolled in the EDUTL 1901 class. She then continued to try to support these students when no advisor was listed in the system for the major. These new students were confused and unsure where to go with their questions. She provide reassurance and guidance on their next steps. Thank you for helping to reduce these students anxiety.”
  • Dr. Wayne Schlingman
    • Wayne goes above and beyond for every undergraduate in the Department of Astronomy. Not only does he run the summer research program, but he goes out of his way to make sure the students are doing well. He will actively reach out during tough times in the semester to check in with students individually. He will also always help you with anything academic or life related. Without him, many undergrads studying Astronomy or Physics would be lost or at a much less advantageous position in life. Words cannot describe the amount of effort and care he puts in for the students and wellbeing of the department as a whole.”
  • Sara E. Watson
    • On being an outstanding and supportive advisor as well as great role model for her students”

ACADAOS is excited to announce the return of the monthly raffle for Advisor of the Month with this month’s winners being… Cecilia Johnson and Dr. Wayne Schlingman! Congratulations!

April/May 2022 Advisor of the Month

Check out some of the wonderful things our advising colleagues have done the past two months! Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

  • Melissa Hoyt
    • Melissa has done an amazing job creating and updating materials for summer orientation, especially across two GE curriculums. It’s a lot to keep track of, and she’s done it seamlessly. Thanks for all of your hard work!”
  • Vicki Melnick
    • Vicki is crushing it as a new Exploration advisor! She brings such a wonderful wealth of experiences from her time in SASSO and she is immediately making a significant impact on our team and on our students. So glad you’re with us, Vicki!”
  • Anita Simpson
    • Math Advisor Anita Simpson continues to go above and beyond in providing quality service to students, faculty and staff. She streamlined the OSU Math Department website (including Math QuickRef) to be user friendly, volunteers each season to host the after-hours recruitment events, and spearheads the Math Placement Test operations which entails thousands of extra emails during the summer orientation timeframe…. in addition to providing prompt responses to the endless Math Advising inbox email requests. So, please give a shout out to Anita who goes above and beyond every single day in providing quality and timely responses to so many OSU constituents.”
  • Peggy Strow
    • “Peggy always goes above and beyond for everybody in the office. Despite being short-staffed in the office, when an advisor is out sick, Peggy has made sure that the advisor’s students are covered and that the advisor needs to focus on their health. Peggy is our rock.”
  • Louise Vasher
    • Louise has done a fantastic job picking up extra work while our office is has been short staffed. She has exceeded my expectations with orientation prep and planning and is working hard to make our new students feel welcomed. We are lucky to have her in our office.”

February 2022 Advisor of the Month

Check out some of the wonderful things our advising colleagues have done this past month! Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

  • Ali Grandey
    • Ali, as an Academic Planning Specialist, assists with curriculum development as well as advising. Our department has been simultaneously revising two majors (Air Transportation, and our Geography BA) this year, and Ali has provided keen insights in how to translate the faculty desires for restructuring into advising sheets that are simple and practical from a student perspective. Having her as part of our curricular team has helped us make quantum leaps in redesigning our majors to best serve our students.”
  • Jocelyn Nevel
    • Jocelyn has been the primary advisor for our largest major, ASC Air Transportation for several years. This major has been hit with some unforeseen challenges of both growth in student counts as well as a sharp decline in flight lab availability (for a variety of reasons outside of our control). Jocelyn interfaces well with our partners in the Center for Aviation Studies, and she is grace under pressure with all of our students in a difficult time. I greatly appreciate her compassionate, professional and direct approaches to helping students navigate delays in their curriculum and to form the best alternate plans they can.”

January 2022 Advisor of the Month

Check out some of the wonderful things our advising colleagues have done this past month! Thank you to each of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the students in your areas and OSU!

  • Matt Ralph
    • Matt is an awesome advisor and colleague. He is always willing to jump in to help on projects or provide back-up to other advisors in our office. Recently, one of our advisors was out so Matt stepped in and helped resolve some urgent issues for some of her students that came up during her absence. Matt can always be relied on and often goes above and beyond for his students! I’m thankful to have a great colleague in him! Go Matt!”
  • Joanna Spanos
    • Joanna repeatedly goes above and beyond to help students and staff alike during tough transitions. In addition to taking on new role responsibilities, she has been training multiple new Advisors, filling in advising roles for other departments when needed, running the Peer Mentor Program for Honors, all while supporting her own student caseload. We just KNOW that Joanna is constantly getting pinged with off-the-cuff questions, but she never lets it show. Her personality and quick jokes have a positive effect on her team members.”

  • Caitlin Burden
    • Caitlin has gone above and beyond in creating and updating an incredibly helpful detailed spreadsheet for Math Advising that allows us to see all variables related to the thousands of seats offered in the Math Department each term. This helpful tool is used to modify class offerings where possible so that more students are accommodated as early as possible within staffing and room constraints. Thanks Caitlin for being the Tech guru for Math Advising.”
  • Mary Kay Pohlschneider
    • Mary Kay is great! She gives helpful life advice, and you can talk to her about anything.”
