Big Assignment #2

My goal for this drawing/collage was to go from a lighter scene to something more bold. I also wanted to go from a more complex scene to a simpler one. My first two drawings are from observation. The last drawing is something I came up with myself. Throughout this collage I used pencil, charcoal, and graphite. In total this took about 7 hours to complete and I am very proud of myself for the hard work I put into this project.

Descriptions:

1/3 in collage:

Atmospheric Perspective: drawing the dorms Park-Stradley and Baker Hall West.

2/3 in collage:

Drawing of a bedroom scene in my dorm room.

3/3 in collage:

This drawing uses one point perspective in the cube. This drawing highlights my transition from being an athlete stuck in a box to a college student with no boundaries.

DL Assignment #5 — Reflection

Reflection:

The main challenge I had in my assignment was giving each object value. I overcame this by using different tools and adding water to the ink. Using a variety of tools allowed me to get a different sort of look for each object (mark making). In some of the objects I used the same tool for the whole object while in others I used multiple. I think this added a complexity to my drawing that I didn’t know I could make it have. I tried to use the watered down ink to fill in the canola oil bottle and I really like how that turned out. I also used the watered down ink to try to show the crease in the waffle maker since it was black. The water created somewhat of a crease when it hit the light due to this choice. Learning from the critique, I think that the cheese grater really contrasted most everything else in the drawing. I think this was because of the fine detail with all of the dots I made and the very light value I put into it. I also tried to outline the cheese grater with a subjective line to give it more dimension. I wish I would have researched more beforehand on how to add value to ink. I tried cross hatching, however, I feel as if I was a bit unsuccessful in it. Overall, I think I did a great job on my first big drawing and I am proud of myself.
