Year in Review

This past year has been one of the most challenging yet most humbling experiences in my life and has helped shape me into a better individual. Unlike this time last year, I now have a much clearer vision of where I want to go in life. Through all of the challenges that I had to face this year, I was able to witness first hand how capable I am of achieve anything I put my mind to. Working two jobs as well as trying to manage a full course load has been very challenging but I don’t have any regrets from it. First semester I managed to remain on the Dean’s list and I intend on finishing this semester out strong so I can make it again this semester.

Before entering the Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholar group, I was simply a young adult looking to live up to expectations and focus primarily on school. Now, I can only look back in amazement as to how far I have came since then. I still have the same motivations and drive that push me to achieve success, but the meaning of success has evolved for me. Freshman year, what I considered being successful or not was the amount of salary you were making, car you were driving, and house you were residing in, all materialistic things. Since then I have came a long way, I now view success based on the ability to make an impact in other peoples lives rather than materialistic things. I have learned that the feeling of being able to be there for another individual is a feeling that can not be replicated by anything else.

Through the Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholar program, I have learned how to implement successful leadership techniques to be a better leader for not just myself, but for my community as well. I have learned about so many different leadership personalities and have worked on different traits from each to help make me an overall valuable leader. I have also matured to a point where I can truly value others opinions or ideas. Listening to others provides the opportunity to see a perspective in which you were not aware of before. The journey thus far has been a very humbling experience and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.

One of the most important life lessons that I can take away from my time in Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars can be described best by the words of Linda Ellis, “For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash.  What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash”. Just like we are born, we will eventually die as well. It’s not about how or when we die, but rather what we choose to do with the time we do have. Rather than living life going through the motions, I intend on using the time I do have to make a lasting impact on the lives of as many individuals that I can. With every step, bring someone up with me.

About Me

Hey! My name is Dharar Abdus-Sabur and I am from right here, Columbus, Ohio. Due to the fact that my mother is from Kenya, I like to consider myself Kenyan as well. I am also a psychology major on a pre-med track. I decided to major in psychology because I find myself very intrigued by people’s thoughts and actions. Also, many of my friends suggested I should major in psych because they say I have an ability to help solve many problems people may be going through. Whether it being stress, relationship issues, or just life as a whole. I am not so sure exactly what I want to do as a profession, but I do know I would love to do something within the medical field. Not just because it almost promises good pay, but mostly because I love the idea of being able to help and make an impact. On my spare time, I like hanging out with friends, shoot some hoops, or watch Netflix.
