  3. Charles Gaines
  4. Yayoi Kusama
  5. Kathe Kollwitz

  7. Josef Albers

1: Elizabeth Catlett

– Catlett’s artwork was an immediate interest to me, the reason being the up closeness of the art and her wonderful use of contrast and contour in her many graphic art pieces. As well another reason for my interest in Catlett’s art is her depiction of the state of Black people in the early and mid-20th century in the U.S. Taking viewers of her art to a time in the past that was glory for some and quite the opposite for others.

2: Alice Neel

– Neel’s artwork captured my attention due to the portraits of various people. To me, Neel’s artwork was subtle yet alive. Meaning, yes, the people in portraits might be long gone, but as a viewer, you can feel the happiness, sorrow, and longing of these models.

3: Charles Gaines

– What intrigued me the most in Gaines’s art was his use of “grid” to create colorful and elaborate connections, like those that depict trees, which to me look like the various neurons found in our brain and throughout the body. Gaines’s art reminded me of the use of Brainbow, which allows the emphasis of neurons in the animal brain.

HW  3:   Value – reading, bullet points and drawing.pdf

  • 1: Having a value scale comes in in handy when attempting to draw an art piece that consists of different shades.
  • 2: A value scale allows us to see the different shades of black & grey; it allows us to distinguish such marks as we embark in our drawings.
  • 3: Nonetheless a good drawing which is both “effective and believable” does not encompass “all values”.
  • 4: With that said having a value scheme or “planning a value scheme” while still drawing the foundation of your art piece, will allow the finished art to be balanced.
  • 5: Value schemes thus give unique value to different objects in your finished art piece.

HW 2 : Homework 2: The Secret of Drawing 1 – the Line of Enquiry

What fascinated me is that the buildings, the cars, and evening the clothing that we wear all “started with few lines on a page,” according to the narrator.

As long as humankind inhabited earth, art has been an essential tool for communicating and passing down ideas; creative people who mastered such skills were deemed as artists like those of the Italian renaissance man Leonardo Da Vinci and later John Russell for his famous moon drawings. Nonetheless, in modern times we find individuals who are not considered as artists yet use art in order to achieve extraordinary accomplishments such as “transforming people’s lives” and times evening saving them. Such an individual is Francis Wells, “a leading heart & chest Surgeon” from the U.K who uses drawings and sketches for his operations. According to Wells, his drawings “are not done to be exhibited”; rather, they are “personal drawings” that always him to “think” and process for the surgery he is about to embark.

As the narrator stated in the beginning of the video that “drawing is the single most fruitful and vital artistic skill at work in the world today” I found myself agreeing to such a statement, even though I do not deem myself as an artist but rather as an appreciator of art. Art, to me is an exemplary form of expression, a communicative tool that does not need words nor actions to depict how one is feeling; rather, the art itself does the speaking.
