Other Methods of Making Coffee

Of the many different ways and equipment to make coffee, most of them fall under four different brewing methods: Pressure, Steeping, Filtration or Dripping, and Boiling. Examples of equipment used for the four different methods are illustrated in the following info-graphic:

First: Brewing Using Pressure:

This method involves pushing hot water through coffee grounds as a result of steam pressure. Examples of equipment that use this method include the Espresso machine and the Moka pot. [1]

Second: Brewing Using Steeping:

One of the easiest methods to brew coffee is steeping. This method just involves mixing the coffee with hot water and allowing them to infuse. Coffee grounds are then separated from the hot water. Examples of this method include the French Press machine and the instant coffee bags. One disadvantage of this manual infusion method however is that the person making coffee has to control the brew time to adjust the flavor so that it is not weak or bitter. [2]

Third: Brewing Using Filtration or Dripping:

Dripping is a very popular method of brewing coffee. Coffee is made by pouring hot water over coffee contained in a filter and allowing it to drip in a container. Coffee can be made using this method by either automatic drip coffee makers or by manually pouring water over coffee placed in a filter. [2]

Fourth: Brewing Via Boiling:

Brewing coffee by boiling might be the oldest and most economic method of extracting coffee. Coffee is boiled in a pot on the fire as the case with Cowboy coffee or Turkish coffee. This method results in a strong coffee flavor. [1]
