For the “above and beyond” aspect of Phase 1, the team chose to foreshadow into the findings that we may find in Phase 2, and perform some of our own market research around campus. We hoped this could also help us see how coffee style pods affect the life of current users and the proliferation of recycling on campus. From class we learned about several different ways of collecting data, so we choose to do two different types of surveys. In the non-obtrusive survey, we would set out a survey at the gym check-in location, and as people checked in they could mark under a given category. For the obtrusive study, we each questioned a few people while we were out and about for class, and recorded the results.
The results for the three surveys are as follows.
Given that we live on a college campus, the results that we found here were as expected. With a lot of late nights and early mornings, a lot of students use coffee as a pick me up.
For this survey, we were surprised by the results. We thought that there would be less people that said they recycled. However we discussed that the results to this study may be slightly skewed, because people feel that it is wrong to say that they don’t recycle. This may also be why the results of the non-obtrusive study are closer to a 60-40 split, where as the obtrusive study is more of a 75-25 split.
Lastly, this study came as no surprise to us based on our audience. Majority of students buy their coffee on campus, so they responded other. In the future it would be helpful to know where students buy their coffee, and how that store brews it, to get better results.
