Element 4: Middle Childhood Pressures

During the middle childhood age range children begin to join groups, clubs, teams in which they may establish their friend groups. At the same time children are feeling the pressure to fit in and in many instances be “popular”. Often times children link happiness with the group of friends they associate with. This link comes directly from the thought of how they are perceived in the world. These relationships that they create with friends and peers are important to the growth and socialization of the child. In this blog we will briefly touch on the pressures of fitting in and the social norms that are learned throughout this process.

You will notice that these social groups that children take part in will lead to good and bad decisions. Children will follow the group in order to fit in, wether the outcome is positive or negative for the child. It is important for parents not to interfere and allow the children to run their course and socialize on their own to an extent. We don’t want children in any real danger. Kids want to fit in so bad because they want to be liked. Being liked leads to happiness no matter what the repercussions. Other kids try to fit in simply out of curiosity. Children need to figure and find things out on their own.

The best thing a parent can do is have an open dialogue with their child, but refrain from butting in. Allow the child to develop their own sense of decision-making skills.
