Outreach

Our research group is involved in a variety of engineering outreach activities throughout the school year and in the summer. Some examples are listed below:

  • RisENG STARS 2018 Program
The RISEng STARS Summer Camp is an engineering summer camp for rising high school juniors and seniors that is hosted by Diversity Outreach and Inclusion (DOI) with the support of Minority Engineering Program (MEP) and Women in Engineering (WiE). Our research group welcomed the participants in our Welding Engineering Labs at Edison Joining and Technology Center (EJTC) on June 18th 2018 for some hands-on engineering activities and a lab tour led by graduate students Alec Martin, Dean Sage, Umair Shah and Yuxiang Zhang.
  • High School Interns
Several students from Columbus Alternative High School have participated as school year and summer interns, working with undergraduate and graduate students in our research group. This high school program is funded by the Manufacturing and Materials Joining Innovation Center (Ma2JIC).
  • COSI 21st Century Learning Lab Engineering
Dr. Fink partnered with the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio for the 21st Century Learning Lab Engineering, which is geared towards 4th to 8th grade high school students in an effort to show them the many facets of the field of engineering and develop communication skills, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. In February and May 2017, Dr. Fink developed and performed “Interview with an Engineer” sessions reaching over 150 high school students. The sessions were specifically geared towards females, in order to give them the opportunity to get some “face time” with a female engineer, learn in short demonstrations and hands-on activities about materials science and welding engineering and what it takes to be an (female) engineer in today’s world.
