Recovering Struggling Students in the Online Course Environment

Audrey Begun and Jennie Babcock of the College of Social Work presented advice for assisting students struggling in online courses. This centered around active engagement and creating a community within the course. They provided tops to monitor student progress, identify who was struggling, and take actionable steps to help them get back on track.

Learning Goals included:

  1. Design courses to prevent student disengagement by front-loading community-building activities.
  2. Recognize signs of student disengagement and struggling in the online context.
  3. Take active steps to engage struggling students with purposeful, effective interventions.
