*** SEPTEMBER 5-7, 2020 FORECAST ***

Gurlz, I don’t know about y’all… but I am ready for some weekend weather! Also… it is a LONG WEEKEND! Thus, you need a weather forecast to plan for your Labor Day weekend plans. Let’s get started:

Saturday:

High-pressure will be dominating across the region with the center of the high-pressure tracking along the Ohio River. This will provide absolutely gorgeous weather with low humidity and below-normal temperatures with a little bit of a fall crisp to the air (ahhhhhhh). Temperatures will start in the 50s with a lovely recovery into the upper 70s. Also, skies will be served sunny-side up!

Sunday:

Sunday will feature a return of southerly flow, but conditions will be quite nice! The humidity will creep up slightly but still manageable. Temperatures will be slightly warmer in comparison to Saturday. There could be a very outside chance of a popup shower during the afternoon hours, but mostly dry conditions should prevail.

Monday:

Monday will feature a bit of a kick in the winds, especially for the first-half of the day. Southerly winds will draw in even warmer and more humid air in advance of a cold front. Thus, temperatures will start in the 60s and warm into the 80s by the afternoon. However, it is not expected that the cold front will not make it through the region and become rather stalled; hence, there does not appear to be a change in the warm conditions with some scattered showers possible.

Have a Great Weekend & Stay Safe!

*** SEPTEMBER 3-4, 2020 FORECAST ***

Hey everyone! If you’re looking for cooler weather soon, it’ll be right around the corner by the end of the week. Tomorrow will be one of last muggy days for a bit with moderate rain showers in the morning, drying out in the afternoon with temperatures in the low 80s. Thursday night will bring the cold front with it, dropping temperatures down into the 50s. There will be a slight chance for showers as the front passes by, but following that will be dry weather. For anyone wanting to go outside, Friday will be cool and dry, bringing temperatures in the low to mid 70s with mostly clear skies.

Welcome back everybody! It’s the first forecast of the new school year, so let’s get right to it. It’s cloudy out right now and just below 80. Tomorrow morning we might see some patchy fog.
We’re going to go through a bit of a muggy stretch this week. Tomorrow we’ll be partly cloudy with highs in the low to mid 80s. Heading into the overnight showers will work into the region. The low will be in the low 70s. Wednesday we’ll be muggy yet again with a few scattered showers and highs in the low 80s.

*** FEBRUARY 11-12, 2020 FORECAST ***

Be the rainbow, taste the rainbow. Okay, not really, but at least there won’t be rain for the next day or so. We’ll see dry conditions for your Tuesday with mostly to partly cloudy skies. Overnight, skies continue to clear as we drop just below freezing. Then on Wednesday the fun (not really) begins as an area of low pressure slides north into the region, bringing the chance for rain and maybe some brief mixed precip. Overnight Wednesday cold air will flood the region as rain transitions to some light snow. For the latter half of the week, we’ll see extremely cold temperatures with highs down in the teens.

*** FEBRUARY 8-10, 2020 FORECAST ***

It is Friday, and WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT IT IS THE WEEKEND!

For Saturday, light snow is likely. There is a disturbance in the upper-level flow that will usher in some moisture and low-level ascent for some light snow. The most concentrated area of snow appears to be around the Cincinnati Metro Area, but much of central Ohio should expect to see some light snow. Temperatures will be fairly cool with AM temps in the upper 20s and PM temps in the mid 30s.

For Sunday, we might see some sunshine very first thing in the morning; however, clouds will rapidly build in in advance of the next weather system out in the Plains states. This will bring in our next chance of precipitation Sunday afternoon and evening. With warm air overrunning the antecedent cold air, it is likely that snow will be the initial precipitation type before a transition to rain occurs during the late evening hours as warmer air is pumped into the region. AM temps will be in the mid 20s (low 20s for rural locations) with PM temps in the mid to upper 30s.

For Monday, Rain will exist for the first half of the day. As of right now, our high temperature will be in the MORNING with temperatures into the lower 40s. As the cold front passes through late morning, the rain will end with temperatures dropping into the 30s for the AFTERNOON.

Active weather continues beyond this forecast period.

Have a GREAT weekend, Buckeyes!

*** FEBRUARY 6-7, 2020 FORECAST ***

Wintry weather is on the way as a low pressure system moves through the Ohio Valley! Tomorrow, temperatures will be in the mid 30s. Precipitation will occur off and on throughout the day, switching between cold rain and freezing rain or sleet. We will be hovering around this transition line on Thursday which lead to the uncertainty in precipitation type. A dry slot will wedge itself into the area by evening/early nighttime. However, by morning, snow will enter the area on the back side of the cyclone. Temperatures will drop below freezing into the mid 20s. Snow will continue on Friday until the evening. Temperatures will hover just around freezing.

Check out additional posts tonight for updates on this developing storm system!

*** FEBRUARY 4-5, 2020 FORECAST ***

Is it winter? Is it spring? Who knows!

We’ll see some rain showers work into the area through the day tomorrow with heavier downpours possible at times. After the passage of a cold front Tuesday night, temperatures will drop and rain will begin to transition to a wintry mix. Freezing rain and sleet will be possible, but any accumulation should be minimal. Heading into Wednesday, precip will taper off as temps hover just above freezing.

*** FEBRUARY 1-3, 2020 FORECAST ***

Oh my goodness, there is a rodent for our background picture!!! Never fear, it is just an innocent groundhog because Groundhog Day is this Sunday! However, let’s check out the latest forecast.

Tomorrow, Saturday, will continue to feature the same regime we have experienced for the past many days: cloudy. A couple pieces of upper-level energy will cross the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley region: one across the Midwest with a second piece located in southern Canada. Since these pieces of energy do not phase much, there should not be a significant chance for appreciable precipitation. With that being said, just enough moisture will be introduced to kick off a few light rain/snow showers with the best chances located across the northern/northeastern portions of the state. AM temps will be in the lower 30s with PM temps in the upper 30s.

Sunday will feature changes, and for many of you, this will be a good thing! Drier air will build in, and southerly flow will commence. As a result, we will recover from AM temps in the lower 30s by soaring into the lower to middle 50s for the PM hours. Also, expect a good deal of sunshine with clouds breaking up throughout the day. Breezy conditions are expected, too, due to a pressure gradient.

Monday will be decent as well. AM temps will be mild as they will be in the upper 30s. Warm air will continue across the region with southerly winds in advance of our next low-pressure system. PM temps will be in the middle 50s easily. Breezy conditions are possible again. Our next chance for rain will arrive toward Tuesday.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

*** JANUARY 30-31, 2020 FORECAST ***

Will we ever see the sun again? Cloudy skies persist as high pressure sits over the region. Temperatures will remain in the mid 30s on Thursday. Clouds continue overnight and temperatures will only drop slightly. On Friday, temperatures remain within the 30s. There is a slight chance of snow/rain showers on Friday as well. Hey everybody! It’s the first Monday forecast of the semester!

We’re going to see some moderate fog move into the area overnight tonight and persist into the day tomorrow. Light snow flurries will also be possible throughout the day. Overnight Tuesday fog will return once again before tapering off during the day on Wednesday. The next chance for some real wintry precipitation will be late Wednesday evening.

*** JANUARY 25-27, 2020 FORECAST ***

It was a gray, disgusting, dreary day across Ohio… only wish we can replace all of this rain with snow (sigh).

Our low-pressure system centered over the eastern part of Illinois will move into the southwestern Michigan/southern Lake Michigan vicinity. A few isolated rain and/or snow showers in the morning will give way to more widespread rain and snow showers by the mid-to-late afternoon hours into the evening. Any accumulations should be fairly limited with no travel impacts anticipated. AM temps will be in the mid-30s with only a slight afternoon recovery.

Cloud cover remains very thick and persistent for the entire forecast period. There remains a small chance for isolated flurries on Sunday, but any flurries should end by Sunday night. Temperatures will be cool, albeit not cold, with AM temps in the upper 20s to lower 30s and PM temps in the mid-to-upper 30s for both days. Please wish for snow!

ALSO, PLEASE WISH OUR VERY OWN, HALEY TAYLOR, A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

Lastly, I understand our background photo has a rat. It is the year of the rat for the Chinese New Year; as a result, we are celebrating!

Another cloudy winter week in Ohio! Temperatures will be slightly mild tomorrow with reaching the low 40s. It will remain cloudy as temperatures drop close to freezing Thursday night into Friday morning. *** JANUARY 18-20, 2020 FORECAST ***

Welcome back everyone!

Our first forecast weekend forecast of the year actually includes wintry weather! A winter weather advisory is currently in place for most counties in Ohio around and north of the I-70 corridor. Central Ohio around the Columbus area is expected to see a brief period of moderate snow during the overnight hours before a transition to a wintry mix of freezing rain and rain. Snow accumulations will likely remain under a half inch. Temperatures during the overnight hours will be in the upper 20’s but will warm into the lower 30’s and above freezing by the morning hours (especially after 8 a.m.). Roads could be hazardous, especially between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. but will generally be okay by the late morning and early afternoon. As temperatures warm above freezing, precipitation will change entirely to rain and last into the afternoon. Periods of rain will come to an end as the cold front pushes into the area by the early evening hours on Saturday. Winds will begin to gust to around 40 mph at times.

Behind the front on Sunday and Monday, we are expecting temperatures in the upper teens to mid-20’s. Relatively breezy conditions on Sunday will lead to wind chills in the teens. By Monday, winds will be calming down and temperatures will start to moderate ahead of the next “warm” spell.

Good luck to those going through their spring semesters!

Say goodbye to the mild temperatures for a while at least. The temperatures will start in the lower 30s tomorrow morning in the wake of a weak cold front. We will see the temperatures decrease throughout the day along with overcast skies. The clouds will clear out by morning with temperatures in the upper 20s overnight. On Friday, the high will be around 30 with partly cloudy skies.

*** JANUARY 11-12, 2020 FORECAST ***

We have an active weather pattern to help end the first week of classes! While Ohio is seeing rain caused by southerly flow upward from the Gulf of Mexico and a stationary front located near Chicago, states like Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas have an entirely different situation. The same intense low pressure system bringing us rain is bringing the Plains and southern states tornadoes, squall lines, and high winds, currently ongoing and will lead into the overnight hours and tomorrow morning.

This system doesn’t go away anytime soon for the South or for Ohio. As the center of the low moves to the northeast, it brings with it strong winds and extremely warm temperatures. We could see temperatures hit 70 degrees, breaking the old record of 66 degrees set all the way back in 1890. As the low gets closer, the winds will continue to pick up, hitting gusts of upwards of 40mph for Saturday night. The rain continues through the weekend, bringing our precipitation totals up to about an inch and could be locally heavier in spots that see thunderstorms.

Pictured below is a screen capture from the 12Z run of the HRRR showing our rainfall coverage for tomorrow at the dinner time rush. If you’ve got plans to walk the Short North, maybe stopping into Mission Coffee Co. LLC for a latte or picking up cupcakes at Short North Piece of Cake, or perhaps doing some early shopping for Valentine’s Day, plan to keep that umbrella on hand!

Stay dry Columbus!

*** NOVEMBER 21-22, 2019 FORECAST ***

We will see temperatures in the mid-50s tomorrow, but it will be pretty cloudy throughout the day. However, Thursday night a cold front will move through the area with a few showers, and temperatures dropping into the upper 30s. This leaves us in the mid-40s on Friday with clouds lingering. Is the semester over yet? Sadly no, but at least it will be a calm week weather-wise. We’ll see clouds moving in tonight and sticking around for the next few days. *** NOVEMBER 16-18, 2019 FORECAST ***

Is it Friday yet? I hope so because I need the weekend NOW!

Anyway, back to the weather! Our temperatures tonight will drop down into the mid-to-upper 20s with some clouds building in as we progress into the night. These 20s will feel more comfortable than the single digits we experienced Tuesday morning! As we head into tomorrow, sky conditions will trend more toward clearer conditions as the day progresses with high temperatures rounding out around 40. Temperatures will be a bit cooler Saturday night into Sunday morning than tonight due to fewer clouds allowing more radiation to be radiated back out to space (geek moment). We are expecting low temperatures to be in the lower-to-mid 20s Sunday morning. On Sunday, winds will turn light and variable with a tendency for more clouds as the day progresses with high temperatures in the mid-40s. Heading into Sunday night into Monday morning, cloudy skies will limit our cooling and only allow us to drop into the mid-30s. On Monday, mostly cloudy skies will be the regime with a very, very weak piece of energy moving across the Ohio Valley. This may permit a sprinkle with high temperatures in the lower-to-mid 40s. Overall, not a bad forecast considering our polar plunge earlier this week!

The temperatures are about to take a major plummet! A cold front will move through early tomorrow morning as temperatures drop from the low 40s to the upper 20s throughout the day. There will also be rain showers associated with the front that could possibly turn to snow by afternoon. If this occurs, expect a light dusting of snow on grassy areas. The front clears out by Thursday night leaving temperatures as low as 22 overnight. By Friday, it will be clear with cold temperatures only reaching the mid 30s. This is only a preview of the temperatures to come next week!

For starters, it’s pronounced “Bubbly”…

After a wild storm yesterday, complete with heavy rain, very strong winds and even light snow, we are expecting a relatively quiet weekend. Temperatures will range from the mid-40’s to the low 50’s with low temperatures consistently in the 30’s. This colder weather is expected to moderate as we head into next week but for now temperatures will remain rather chilly. Dry weather is also expected despite the possibility of showers to our north on Saturday and late Monday.

As for the long-range, we are watching the possibility of a much stronger wave of colder weather to end the week next week, with more winter-like weather expected.

Happy birthday Adam Lechliter!

*** OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 1, 2019 FORECAST ***

“I got cold temperatures!”
“I got some rain!”
“I got a rock…”
The rain will continue throughout Thursday as a low pressure system moves through central Ohio. With the frontal passage Thursday night, temperatures will plummet possibly below freezing. This means that a few isolated flurries cannot be ruled out. Also, it will be windy with gusts easily over 30 mph. Luckily, the rain will move out by Friday leaving behind clear conditions but colder, just in time for the Meteorology Club at The Ohio State University‘s Bake Sale running from 9am to 4pm outside of Derby Hall!Happy Halloween!!

Who’s ready for another week of fall-like weather? We’ll see temps in the mid to upper 60s this Tuesday and Wednesday with mostly cloudy skies. *** OCTOBER 26-28, 2019 FORECAST ***

October, where did you go? Next week is November!

But first spooky season

An active weather pattern will begin this weekend with a surge of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Newly formed Tropical Storm Olga is expected to move northward and interact with an upper level disturbance that will produce widespread heavy rain across portions of the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys. Rain is expected to begin Saturday morning (before the Wisconsin game) and continue periodically into the evening hours ahead of a warm front. Rainfall amounts could exceed 1″ across much of central Ohio. A few showers and a rumble of thunder may be possible in the late evening and overnight hours while the cold front approaches the area. We may experience gusty winds along the cold front, but severe weather is not expected at this time.

Temperatures will likely reach the mid-60’s early Sunday morning as well with falling temperatures expected throughout the day. Dry weather is expected both Sunday and Monday with temperatures in the 60’s.

October 19-21, 2019 Forecast:

Oh my goodness, I am exhausted. Fall Break was NOT long enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, back to what we do here: THE WEATHER!

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued a FREEZE WARNING for Franklin County/Columbus and surrounding counties. FROST ADVISORY has been issued for counties further away from Columbus. With this in mind, good radiational cooling conditions will allow temperatures to drop into the lower-to-mid 30s. Clear skies will persist into Saturday with a slight increase in cloud cover, and an abundant amount of sunshine will permit temperatures to rise into the mid-60s. On Sunday, a FANTASTIC weather day is on tap! Morning temperatures in the mid-to-upper 40s with afternoon temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60s will be the regime. Unfortunately, things will change on Monday (typical Ohio autumnal weather). A low-pressure system will approach from the west and usher in an increase in winds and rain chances. Rain chances will be the highest between 2 PM and 8 PM on Monday. It should be noted that within any shower or thunderstorm, wind gusts could be higher. AM Temps on Monday will be warmer in the mid-50s with high temperatures within 70.

*** SEPTEMBER 28-30, 2019 FORECAST ***

It’s the end of the first week of fall and it’s time to get hot and spooky!

Our unusually warm and dry September continues over the weekend with temperatures in the mid-upper 80’s. By Monday, we are expecting temperatures to reach the lower 90’s, which is very impressive for this time of year. Due to a building ridge of high pressure, unusually warm temperatures are expected to persist through mid-week next week and as long as we continue in drought conditions, it is likely that early-mid October ends up being relatively warm compared to normal.

Despite the dry weather, there is the potential for a shower or thunderstorm tomorrow during the day but the chances are slim.

Enjoy the warmth and dry weather while it lasts! Fall is definitely on the way as the first major winter storm of the season is expected to impact the higher elevations of Montana, Idaho and southern Canada over the weekend. The snow isn’t too far away.

Temperatures are forecast to hit the lower 90’s tomorrow under mostly sunny skies. Humidity will be on the rise as well with winds increasing from the south and southwest. Overnight on Tuesday a weak cold front will approach the area from the upper Great Lakes, bringing mid and upper level clouds to the area. This may help to spark isolated thunderstorm development in the afternoon on Wednesday, especially in northern Ohio. Otherwise, temperatures will likely remain in the upper 80’s with very humid conditions.

Stay cool everyone!

The first round of midterms are right around the corner, but at least we get some nice weather beforehand! Clouds will move into the area for tomorrow’s game against Cincinnati and keep our temperatures well under 80. Skies will clear overnight and we will see a slight chance of showers for Sunday afternoon and evening. Monday will see very clear skies and highs near 80. Go Bucks!

Check out one of our forecaster’s videocast for tomorrow! Ben will be providing us with a gameday forecast tomorrow morning so be sure to check it out!

The third week of class is already halfway over! We will see clear skies with less humidity throughout Thursday and Thursday night courtesy of the beautiful high pressure sitting over the state. Friday will get slightly more humid with a few clouds, but overall should be a nice time as you walk to the OUAB Welcome Back Concert!!

***AUGUST 31 Hurricane Dorian DISCUSSION***

Hello all! We are in the peak of hurricane season, which runs June 1st-November 30th. This year, we have Hurricane Dorian, currently forecast to be a Category 4 at landfall. Let’s take a look at how Dorian formed, and what he’s planning on doing…

There are three types of cyclones that can form: tropical, extratropical, and subtropical cyclones. Hurricane Dorian is a tropical cyclone, which is a warm corenon-frontal low pressure system of synoptic scale (about the horizontal length of 1,000 kilometers from the ground) that develops over the tropical or subtropical oceans. The temperature of the core is vital in determining if the system is a tropical or extratropical cyclone especially as we get later and later into the hurricane season (think September/October and beyond).

In order for a hurricane to form, many scientists have a different number of important factors, but we like to reduce it down to three key elements:

  1. Sea surface temperatures: ideally, we need warm sea surface temperatures above 26°C.
  2. Weak upper level winds in the atmosphere.
  3. Some sort of disturbance to provide low level convergence and rotation

So, where exactly have all the hurricanes been this year? We’ve been in an El Niño, which means waters around the equator off of South America have been warm and usually indicates a normal hurricane season. It is also possibly linked to this year’s spring severe weather outbreaks in the Southeast United States because El Niño conditions help to speed up the subtropical jet stream. We’re currently almost in La Niña conditions, which means those water temperatures are slightly cooler than normal. For much of the summer, there was a strong high pressure system over the Atlantic, which caused warm air to flow over Greenland (leading to the big ice melt we heard about last month) and cool air off of the coast of Africa pushed cooler water into the Main Development Region (the MDR, or the region between 10 and 20 degrees north in the Atlantic). This explains why we’d only heard about the Pacific named systems; the water over there was much warmer than on our side of the continent.

For Dorian, the eye initially dissipated south of St. Lucia and redeveloped west of Martinque, explaining the jog north in its initial path. From there, it went east of Puerto Rico and developed a dry slot to the north due to the running of air up the mountains and sinking down the other side. What’s next for Dorian? Initially, it was projected to make landfall near Jupiter, Florida along the southeast coast, but models are predicting a shortwave trough to exit the Ohio Valley region and weaken the high pressure system, causing Dorian to possibly turn north towards South Carolina. Dorian will move over sea surface temperatures near 30°C and is currently moving at 8 mph. No matter the exact path, areas within the cone of possibility could face a great amount of flooding and wind damage.

Just because Dorian is NOT currently forecast to make landfall in Florida doesn’t mean Florida is safe from harm. Dorian could have impacts over a large area, and if he makes it close enough to the coastline, cities like Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach, West Palm Beach, and Jacksonsville could still see near-hurricane force winds and storm surge, along with flooding for the main risk. Labor Day weekend hurricanes are not uncommon in the least: more than two dozen hurricanes have hit over the holiday weekend since 1851 (for more reading on this: https://time.com/5666204/florida-hurricanes-labor-day-history/). *** AUGUST 31-SEPTEMBER 2, 2019 FORECAST ***

Is it the end of the semester yet? No? Well, at least there’s a three day weekend!

Saturday looks to be mostly cloudy for the first OSU football game. Temperatures will remain in the lower 80s, unlike past home games where it was in the 90s and sweltering! Rain may move into the area Sunday afternoon and barely top out at 80. Fortunately, the rain will be moving out come Monday with warming temperatures likely. Have a safe Labor Day weekend and Go Bucks!#2WeeksDown12ToGo #SquadGoals
