Environmental Policy and Decision Making (EPDM)

Maria Fredericks

SENR Ambassador
fredericks.35@osu.edu

Hometown: Valley Stream, NY
Major: Environmental Policy and Decision Making (EPDM), Honors
Specialization: Environmental and Social Justice

Future Career Plans: After I complete my undergraduate career, I plan on pursuing a Law Degree in New York. I would love to create environmental change both from the top level through policy reform and from the ground level through community organizing. I imagine my future in a multitude of careers and geographical places.

Favorite part of OSU/SENR: I love being an Ohio State student because of all the amazing opportunities available to me. If something I want to do is not available on campus, I have the resources and connections to start a new organization, project, or campaign to my liking.

Internships: New York City Council- I was charged with Upper East Side constituent casework that pertained to legal and housing issues. This included corresponding with officials from government agencies and community advocacy organizations in order to help the constituent to the best of our ability. I was able to jump start a project that involved reusable bag distribution to local public housing units. The purpose of this project was to give reusable bags to the elderly and the poor who would otherwise be disproportionately impacted by the bill.

Study Abroad: Buck-I-Serv trip to Guatemala where I built houses for the locals in need.

Other Involvements:

  • Renew OSU Founder and Organizer
  • Blackburn House Resident Advisor
  • Morrill Scholars Program as a member on the Communications Team
  • LASER Mentor
  • Real Food Challenge OSU member

Future Career Plans: Investigative Environmental Journalist

Favorite Part of OSU/SENR: What’s NOT to love about SENR? It’s such a beautifully tight-knit community full of passionate people that want to change the world. We all have that drive to create a better tomorrow for everyone. Even the academic support network is phenomenal, with all staff absolutely dedicated to the success of each and every student!

Internships: Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks, Watercraft & Preserves- I wrote press releases for different events across the state, created social media content to get the public engaged online, and even had the opportunity to visit a state park (and get paid to go hiking/swimming!). One of the most important things I learned through the experience was what I *don’t* want to do, as well as the type of environment that is necessary for me to thrive in. Governmental agencies are extremely restrictive in what they can allow an intern to accomplish, and most of the time I didn’t have much work to do simply because I completed it too quickly. But, these lessons are just as important!

Other Involvements:

  • Leadership Council Chair for the Environment and Natural Resources Scholars
  • Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Volunteer
  • Photographer
  • Reporter for The Lantern student newspaper
  • Blogger
  • Social Media Coordinator for the Ohio Woodland Stewards Program

Favorite part of OSU/SENR: I love the tight-knight, compassionate student community at SENR and the wealth of resources available to us, from amazing advisors to internship and career opportunities. I feel like I’m at a much smaller college when I come to SENR!

Internships: I plan to work for the Ohio Senate this summer. In the past, I have worked at a local farm and loved the experience of getting paid to work outdoors and help customers interact with agriculture. I have also worked as a University Telecounselor and Parent-Directed Program Worker for Franklin County Residential Services.
