Artifacts

The artifact represented in this image is a boot used to treat stress fractures. I have worn this boot on multiple occasions where I have had a stress fracture. It is important to me as it has been critical in my physical healing for each injury I have had as well as it symbolizes my strength while I have been hurt. I remained strong while I was in both physical pain and emotional pain as I had something I love and am passionate about; running, taken away from me. I learned many things about persistence, human anatomy, and physical therapy while wearing this boot. I went to therapy on/off for about 4 years. My time I spent in physical therapy made me realize being a physical therapist was exactly what I wanted to do as a career. For my next steps, this means pursuing an education that puts me on track to become a physical therapist. My current plans are to complete my undergraduate education with a psychology degree and be prepared to start graduate school for physical therapy. This artifact represents where I want to go in my future and how I want to help people struggling and in pain.

About Me

Hello, my name is Hannah Paquette! I am a first year pursuing a Psychology major with a career goal involving the LGBTQ+ community and sexual assault victims. I am in the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars Program. I am very interested in how the human body and mind work and function. In addition to my academic and career interests, I am a very active person. I love to run, swim, play basketball with friends, and work out. I really enjoy being outside while I study and listen to music.

Outside of the classroom, I am currently working at EspressOH in the Ohio Union. I volunteer with various groups and organizations doing activities such as weeding and gardening, helping the elderly perform tasks they are not capable of doing themselves, and helping to work children’s school events. I am also a member of A Moment of Magic at Ohio State, a club that brings happiness and joy to children that have disabilities or medical vulnerabilities with hospital visits and fundraisers.

My top five strengths based on a VIA character strength assessment are kindness, social intelligence, honesty, curiosity, and teamwork. I connect to kindness as a strength as I care deeply for other people and it is very important to me to show kindness to others to the best of my ability. I also connect to social intelligence because of my compassion for other people that allows me to socially connect with and understand others. I connect with honesty because being honest is a major part of my morals. Curiosity connects to me as I am always eager to learn and know more about the world around me. Lastly, I connect to teamwork because of the enjoyment I get from working together with others to accomplish great things.

Year in Review

I have evolved in many ways in the past year as both a student and a person. My involvement in the club A Moment of Magic has had very large impacts on me. I have spent a great deal of time volunteering and working with underprivileged and terminally ill children. I have grown in my humility, appreciation for what I have, and ability to help those in need. I have learned a great deal about being a role model and leader for those in great need. Additionally, I have learned a great deal about myself as a student. I have learned the significant value in effort and using your resources. Specifically in my second semester, I utilized my available office hours and tutoring centers as much as possible. I learned how to better balance my academics with my mental and physical health. I learned that taking care of my health is essential for academic success. I will take what I have learned throughout this year to continue to evolve and grow as a person and as a student.

Go bucks!

G.O.A.L.S.

With my HES peer mentor group, I went to a coffee shop called The Roosevelt on October 28th. We took a COTA bus to the Short North, where The Roosevelt is located. From the bus stop to the coffee shop, we walked about 10 minutes. We all enjoyed some delicious coffee while we had some nice conversations. We sat inside and enjoyed the homey feeling of the atmosphere. The Roosevelt had very nice seating options inside and outside that we were able to choose from. What I enjoyed the most about my experience was being able to relax in a comfortable and peaceful area. What I would do differently next time is I would bring my laptop with me so that I could work on school assignments while I am there. I will go back and I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

Career

I have gained some experience so far relevant to my future career. My current career plan is to pursue a career in therapy focused on the LGTBQ+ community as well as sexual assault victims. I have spent a great deal of time working with various therapy programs. One of the programs I have worked with focuses on victims of trauma, including sexual assault victims. I have learned a lot about approaches to addressing victims and their traumatic experiences. I have also worked with programs made up of a majority of members of the LGBTQ+ community. I have developed a greater understanding of different issues that arise in specific communities.
