Postdoc position “Reactive Transport Modeling of the Cranfield Large-Volume CO2 Injection Pilot Project”

The School of Earth Sciences (SES) at the Ohio State University (OSU) is seeking to fill a Postdoctoral Research position to work on numerical modeling of reactive transport and geochemistry related to the Cranfield CO2 injection field site. The position is funded through the NETL-DOE grant “Monitoring of Geological CO2 Sequestration Using Isotopes and PF Tracers”, which involves collaborations between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (PI), OSU, the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology, the US Geological Survey, and the Southeastern Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership. Data gathering has been ongoing as part of this project since 2009 and has produced a rich data set that offers unique opportunities to characterize and model a field-scale carbon storage experiment.

The scope of the advertised postdoctoral project is to develop a novel reactive transport model that will be coupled to OSU’s advanced in-house reservoir simulator for multiphase compositional flow (most likely by using USGS’ iPhreeqc module). These tools will be used to interpret geochemical data collected at the Cranfield site as well as experimental measurements performed at NETL. An earlier publication from this project ( doi: 10.1016/j.ijggc.2016.10.002 ) provides more background on our modeling efforts.

The search will remain open until a suitable candidate has been found. The targeted start date is ‘as-soon-as-possible’. Salary is commensurate with experience and includes generous OSU benefits.

The applicant should have a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Engineering, or an equivalent program. A solid background in chemistry, physics, math, and programming (preferably in Fortran), superior oral and written communication skills, demonstrated experience in research, and interests in scientific problems related to reservoir modeling/engineering are all desirable.

OSU is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer –Race/Gender/Disability/Veteran.
