HONG KONG STUDIES—Issue 5 (Spring 2020) Call for Papers—Gender and Sexuality on Hong Kong Screens
The first bilingual and interdisciplinary academic journal on Hong Kong, Hong Kong Studies (Chinese University Press), is now accepting articles for a special issue, Gender and Sexuality on Hong Kong Screens, curated with Professor Gina Marchetti (HKU) and scheduled for publication in Spring 2020.
Hong Kong cinema opens up a “pivotal place as a public platform for the consideration of Chinese identity, sexual orientation, and gender roles in the digital age,” write the editors of Hong Kong Screenscapes (HKU Press, 2011). Taking this as a point of departure and broadening the scope to discussions of different genders and sexualities, this issue solicits research articles that explore the following topics and more in Hong Kong films: the representation of genders and sexual identities (e.g. gender equality, gender activism, women’s rights, masculinity, the LGBTQIA+ community, non-binary and trans representations), intersectionality between gender and other critical concepts, transnational and multilingual comparisons with other contexts in terms of gender and sexuality, and gender politics in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.
Research articles of no more than 6,000 words (including footnotes but excluding bibliography) should be sent to hongkongstudies@cuhk.edu.hk in Microsoft WORD format before 15 September 2019.
If you are interested in writing a scholarly book review for the issue (1200-2000 words), please email the editors first to discuss suitability.
Please make sure you follow our style sheet (https://goo.gl/UyLM8A) as closely as possible when submitting your work. Please also provide an abstract of 250 words and a short biographical note of no more than 50 words in a separate file. Submissions will undergo a double-blind peer review process.
