Departmental Overview

The Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) is an organized research unit within the Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS).  Established in 1957, CCS covers all areas of China studies with a wide-ranging program of activities. In addition to weekly lectures and colloquia, CCS convenes symposia, organizes conferences, and invites specialists to share their research.  CCS hosts individual visiting scholars and facilitates the visits of Chinese delegations and other China-related activities on campus.  CCS provides research grants to Berkeley faculty, awards postdoctoral fellowships, and provides a large number of graduate fellowships.   The Center for Chinese Studies is one of the most dynamic area research centers at Berkeley, and leads the general effort to expand China-related teaching and research on campus.

Responsibilities

As the primary full-time staff person, the Program Director develops, coordinates and carries out, in consultation with the Center Chair and associated faculty, the organized research activities and programming agenda of the Center.  S/he oversees all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Center, including leading staff, supervising student assistants, and serving as liaison to senior management of IEAS.

Program Development:

Plans various lecture series,workshops, or conferences.  Using area studies knowledge, helps to conceive new topics for research or public presentation, plans new programs or activities based on these topics, and ensures their successful implementation.  In addition, the incumbent seeks to find new means to communicate current research activities across campus and to the general community.

Program Coordination:

Bears full operational responsibility for the implementation of the Center’s programs, including weekly colloquia; brown bag lectures; workshops and conferences; annual fellowship competitions; graduate student research programs, etc.  Consults and coordinates with the part-time Assistant to ensure satisfactory completion of special projects, including the annual New Year’s banquet, special workshops and conferences and occasional receptions.

Fundraising and Donor Relations:

Helps to implement a long-term fundraising plan for the Center.  Identifies, using CADS and other tools, institutional and private donors, keeping donors apprised of Center activities and goals.  Work closely with the Center Chair, IEAS Associate Director and  Director on fundraising or development activities.

Grant Writing and Proposal Development:

Identifies institutional grant opportunities for Chinese studies, and works with the Chair to develop proposals for strengthening Chinese studies on campus.  Solicits input and data from relevant parties to coordinates grant proposals.

Institutional Liaison:

Establishes and maintains ties with peer research institutions and universities worldwide.  Attends professional conferences, makes site visits to potential collaborative partners, makes arrangements for visiting delegations, and acts as host for visiting professors at Berkeley.

Administration, Budgeting and Financial Managment:

The incumbent works with the CCS Chair, IEAS associate director, and CSS finance analyst to manage long-term fiscal planning for Center operations.  Designs and maintains a system of ledgers and reports to help both the Center Chair and Center-funded faculty grant recipients monitor research expenditures. Serves as the Center’s resource on University administrative policies and guidelines, and interprets these policies for the Chair’s understanding.   Processes and oversees business functions, including reimbursements for travel and entertainment, purchasing and other financial transactions.   Manages the content of the Center’s  website and maintains its physical facilities.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelors degree (or higher) in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
• Thorough knowledge of functional area and understanding of how work may impact other areas.
• Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
• Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills.
• Thorough knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
• Thorough knowledge of and skill in delivering programs.
• Thorough knowledge of current research affecting China, the Chinese world and China studies.
• Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new programs to meet organizational needs.
• Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; i.e. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

• General knowledge of Chinese studies and/or East Asian studies, are preferred for full effectiveness in the job.
• Experience with events planning, fellowships, grants, etc., in a unversity setting.
• Fluency in written and spoken Mandarin Chinese .

Salary & Benefits

Annual Salary Range: $59,000.00 – $69,100.00
