Applications are invited for tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor/Associate Professor in Asia and Transnational Connections in the School of Humanities (Comparative Literature), to commence on September 1, 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.
The department of Comparative Literature is the only one of its kind in Hong Kong, and specializes in comparative and historical approaches to literary, film, and cultural studies. Our student body is proficient in two or three languages. The Department offers a very popular Major and also contributes to general education through a significant contribution to the University’s Common Core Curriculum. In addition to the research postgraduate programs (M.Phil. and Ph.D.), it also offers a Master of Arts in Literary & Cultural Studies (MALCS). The Department now seeks to strengthen its research and teaching profile by appointing a person with expertise in Asia, broadly and inclusively defined (e.g. the subcontinent or Middle East), as well as its transnational connections (e.g. to Africa or Latin America). This person should complement existing program strengths. Special consideration will be given to applicants with expertise in gender, feminist, queer and/or women’s studies, as well as postcolonialism, globalization and critical theory.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature or a related field. They should have an established or growing international research profile. The appointee will contribute to undergraduate teaching, the Common Core Curriculum, the research postgraduate programs, and will be expected to apply for external grants. He/She will also carry out administrative duties as appropriate to their rank.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with the appointee’s qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
