The New Zealand Asian Studies Society is pleased to sponsor two postgraduate prizes for the best student papers at the 2017 conference. The prizes aim to recognize outstanding student achievement in research on Asia and award students who display a high level of scholarship in their work. We hope the prizes will also motivate students to develop their conference papers for publication. Two prizes, NZ$300 and NZ$200, will be awarded for the best papers. Winners will also receive a complimentary one-year full NZASIA membership including a one-year subscription to the New Zealand Journal of Asian Studies. In addition, winners will be invited to submit their papers to the New Zealand Journal of Asian Studies; note, however, that publication is not guaranteed as journal submissions are subject to standard review procedures. Applicants must be currently enrolled postgraduate students registered for the conference. Winners will be announced at the conference dinner.

In conjunction with the 22nd NZASIA Conference, we will offer postgraduate students the opportunity to participate in a pre-conference workshop.

This workshop provides a forum for students to discuss their research, exchange ideas, interact with established as well as early career scholars and meet with publishers. Students will do a five-minute presentation on their thesis for valuable feedback from experienced scholars. The workshop will feature discussion panels focusing on research, the challenges of thesis writing, developing conference papers for publication as well as conversations with early career and established scholars and other participants. We will also provide a supportive environment for students to meet other participants, develop networks and enrich their conference experience.

The workshop is free and open only to postgraduate students who have registered and paid for the main conference. Numbers are limited and applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Email to nzasia2017@otago.ac.nz to register for the workshop.

NOTE: If you are looking for a homestay in Dunedin in order to take part in the conference, please email our conference organizing member Keziah Wallis – keziah.wallis@otago.ac.nz – for further information.
