The 4-H Older Youth Opportunities Chart is a fantastic resource that provides a description of each of the following opportunities, as well as what 4-H youth need to do to apply. I encourage all families to review it annually to see what their member is eligible for. If you do indeed decide to apply for an opportunity, please let me know.
TRIPS/CONFERENCES
Ohio Fair Managers Convention: Day-long conference in Columbus, Ohio on January 6, 2018. All Marion County Junior Fair Board members will be invited and are encouraged to attend.
Ohio 4-H Conference: Day-long conference in Columbus, Ohio on March 10, 2018. All active 4-H teens are eligible to attend.
Ohio Capital Youth Challenge: 40 youth who are exceptional leaders and citizens in their community are selected to serve as delegates for the OCYC. Phase I is held March 26 and 27 and Phase II is held May 19. If interested, please notify Margo by November 15 so that she can put together a nomination packet.
Buckeye Leadership Workshop: Become a better leader! Will be held April 4-8, 2018 in Ashley, Ohio. Youth ages 15 OR freshman in high school and older can apply here.
Citizen and Leadership Washington Focus: Held annually in June and July. Youth in grades 7-12 explore, develop and refine their civic engagement skills in Washington D.C. If interested, please notify Margo by January 30, 2018.
National 4-H Dairy Conference: Held annually in September/October. To apply, youth should complete the Ohio 4-H Achievement Record Application and submit it to Margo by December 31 for her review.
International Programs & Exchanges: 4-H has established a strong exchange program with Japan and is always looking for families who would like to host a Japanese youth in the summer. In addition, outbound travel opportunities vary annually. Click here for more information.
STATE-LEVEL BOARDS & COUNCILS
Ohio 4-H Health Heroes: Board of teens who promote healthy living. Applicants must be in grades 8-12 as of the current school year. Terms begin annually in October.
Ohio 4-H Fashion Board: Board of teens who promote 4-H clothing and textile projects. Eligible youth must be nominated by their county. Term begins annually at the Ohio State Fair.
Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council: Statewide group of teens and young 4-H alumni who advise the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Ohio 4-H program. Eligible youth must be 14 to 18 years old as of January 1 of their application year. Applications are due Friday following the Ohio State Fair.
Ohio State Junior Fair Board: Comprised of outstanding individuals who spend the entire 12 days of the Ohio State Fair planning and coordinating State Fair activities. To apply, youth should complete the Ohio 4-H Achievement Record Application and submit it to Margo by December 31 for her review.
STATE-LEVEL CAMPS & WORKSHOPS
Making Extreme Counselors Camp Counselor Training Workshop: Two day long workshop in Columbus, Ohio on February 17 & 18, 2018. All Marion County 4-H Camp Counselors will be invited and encouraged to attend.
Ohio 4-H Shooting Education Camp: Scheduled for June 29-July 1 and July 13-18, 2018. Youth ages 9-12 and 12-18 are eligible. Older teens and alumni may also apply to be counselors at the camp.
Ohio Military Kids Camp Counselor: This amazing camp is held at Kelley’s Island on Lake Erie in August. Applications to be a counselor are due annually in March.
Sea Camp: Scheduled for July 7-11, 2018 at Kelley’s Island on Lake Erie. Eligible youth must be ages 13 to 18 years old. Registration to be a camper is due June 1. Older teens and alumni may also apply to be counselors at the camp.
2018 State 4-H Leadership Camp will be held June 2 to 6. This camp is open to teenagers ages 15 to 18 years old. The focus of the five-day leadership experience is the development of concrete peer leadership skills that will enable participants to have an immediate impact in their home 4-H club, county, community, or school.
