Upcoming Resume Content

Arguably the most important feature of a resume is formatting, so when I finish writing mine I will make sure it has a simple, readable format. Bad formatting that clutters the text and other such downfalls will make a potential employer instantly pass over the resume. One way I can ensure good formatting is by looking at example resumes.

The resume will have my contact information readily available to make sure a potential employer can contact me readily. This also shows how serious I am about wanting to speak with them. Then, I will write a profile of my skills and objectives, catered to the company I am applying for. This section is very important so I will need to be specific about my skill set and eagerness to perform well with the company.

I will list some of my work experience in retail, and in doing so list the duties and skills that might be relevant to the company I am applying for. I have read that specific phrases used here should match your cover letter, so I will tweak and edit both of them this way. Most importantly, again, it’s important to be specific.

Other skills and accomplishments will also need to be listed, especially if they would be useful for the company.

All these sections should come together in a seamless manner. As with formatting, looking at example resumes will help me write and edit mine as well as possible.

Cover Letter (Draft)

To Whom it May Concern,

I’m writing you to express a great interest in an internship for your company. I am a senior at The Ohio State University here in Mansfield and through my academic career, I’ve become more interested in blogging and other ways that companies like yours interact with their audience via the internet.

I have developed excellent communication skills in my classes with Ohio State and at my work outside of class. My ten years of experience in retail and other service industry jobs have greatly aided these communication skills and my ability to interact with the public.

I am very eager to learn more about blogging and advertising in order to be successful at your company. Not only do I have a passion for the way the internet is used to maintain relationships between companies and their clientele, I also have a passion for art and would be more than happy to aid you in marketing your artists the best way possible.

I look forward to discussing this opportunity with you, and I have attached my contact information. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Karnes

Considering Cover Letter Content

As of this moment, I plan to write my cover letter for a news organization as I continue to pursue the field of journalism. Since one of the most important features of a cover letter is format and readability, I will first make sure features such as font and margins are up to standard and simplistic for easy reading.

In the opening of the letter, I will discuss how I heard about the job and any potential knowledge of the organization or company I may already have. I may also state what interests me in the company.

Following that I plan, to list specific relevant skills to the field. While I don’t have any direct experience with reporting or journalism, I may be able to list communication skills I’ve developed while working retail. Communication skills are vital to journalism so this may be a point I want to emphasize. Any applicable educational works and achievements could also go in the middle paragraphs.

I may also want to state that while I don’t have journalism experience, I am very eager to learn the tools of the trade because I have a lot of lot of respect for the company and the field itself. Journalism is a crucial aspect of a free society and I want to make sure my passion for it gets across in my cover letter.

It’s important to be direct in the closing section of the letter, so I will state that I look forward to meeting with the person the letter is addressed to as early as possible, before giving a friendly closing with my contact information.

Exploring English

In this blog I will explore the importance of the field of English in today’s society. English is the foundation for much of our society across a broad range of topics in our everyday lives. Here, a range of topics will be discussed as a means to remind ourselves of that importance. This will be explored by discussing rhetoric, literacy, and relevant career fields such as academia and journalism. Occasionally, I may discuss how it relates to fields you may not normally associate with English, such as history.

Do you have any thoughts on the importance of English in our society today? Add a comment below and your topic may be discussed in an upcoming post!
