- Description: Bento boxes or bento bako are commonly used throughout Japan. Bento (boxed lunches) are taken to work, school, on picnics, and so on. The bento usually consists of multiple items. One half of the bento is typically consists of rice, while the other half includes a variety of side dishes. These side dishes may include vegetables, meat, fish, and/or eggs. A common side dish is tamagoyaki, an omelet cooked with salt and sugar. Often times, the food is cut into fun shapes for children to eat.
