BuckeyeThon Fundraising Party (1 point)
Monday, January 30, 7:00pm, Smith-Steeb
Elizabeth will be hosting a fundraising party in Smith-Steeb, Smith Side glass classroom (the back corner room). We will be emailing friends and family, so please bring email addresses. We will also be discussing some alternative forms of fundraising, such as canning. Please attend even if you’re not participating in BuckeyeThon because we would love to have as many students there as possible contacting friends and family. BuckeyeThon raises money to help treat pediatric cancer patients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital here in Columbus. Currently the IA team has raised over $4,000, and we are aiming to raise another $1,500. *correction from BuckeyeThon team email – please turn in t-shirt money to Brandon Hofacker or Aziza Genglik in Smith-Steeb instead of the front desk.
5th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration (2 points)

Get ready for our biggest event of the year! The Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in Chinese culture, so we intend to celebrate it thoroughly by putting on a great show! The Chinese American Student Association, Pi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc., Asian Business Student Association, and Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. have all worked long and hard to bring you all this FREE Chinese New Year Show. We will have many various acts lined up including a surprise youtube guest! This is one show that you will not want to miss!!
There will be many raffles throughout the night. We have some great prizes lined up, so make sure to stay until the end!!

Doctors Without Borders with Dr. Kim Cremers (2 points)

A Day in the Life (3 points)

Day in the Life of a Buckeye is a program that offers a one-on-one experience for inner city and Appalachian area high school sophomores and juniors [and seniors who have been accepted to the Columbus campus] to experience life at The Ohio State University, and college in general, for a day. Visiting school districts include the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Columbus City Schools, and Warrensville Heights School District. This visit, hosted by currently enrolled undergraduate & graduate students, often include attending classes, interacting with faculty and staff, eating in campus-area dining facilities, visiting the library and recreational facilities, attending student group meetings, and seeing a residence hall room. The 5th Annual A Day in the Life of a Buckeye event will take place on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 and applications are now open until February 5, 2017. Week 2 Update

The following information was sent out in an email on 1/17/17, and has been added to the events calendar. This Wednesday we will have a first year meeting in Hagerty Hall 180. Representatives from STEP will talk with us about the STEP opportunities and we will have a panel of 2nd and 3rd year IA students who have participated in STEP for you to ask questions.


OSU Summer Research Fair (2 points)

This event is for students who are interested in exploring summer research opportunities at Ohio State. Representatives from summer research programs across the university will be present to speak with students. Explore many options for funding existing research projects and other opportunities to just get started. A list of participating programs is available here. The Tumult of Terrorist: Counter-Terrorism Home and Abroad (2 points)

The Alexander Hamilton Society will be hosting a debate on Thursday January 19th at 6:00 at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, right by the Ohio Union, that will discuss different methods the United States and its allies could use to combat all forms of terrorism, whether home-grown, ISIS or Al Qaeda-inspired, or ISIS/Al Qaeda directed. We will be featuring Georgetown professor of Government and Atlantic Council senior fellow Matthew Kroenig and Otterbein professor of Political Science Jason Keiber. Dr. Mansoor from the History department will be moderating the discussion. As always, we will be serving FREE Coke and Wings over products!

Secretary of the Army to visit Ohio State

Eric K. Fanning, secretary of the U.S. Army, will visit The Ohio State University to discuss how changes in demographics, labor markets, and new technologies are forcing the Department of Defense, Army, and other military services to think creatively about how to attract the next generation of Americans to public service. This is an annual day of community service, which brings together nearly 1000 Ohio State students. Meet in the Smith-Steeb lobby on Monday, January 16 at 7:30am to participate with other IA Scholars. Registration begins at 7:45am in the Archie Griffin Ballroom of the Ohio Union. The day will end around 1pm and will conclude with group reflection at Hale Hall, where pizza will be provided.

Racism 101: An Open Conversation with White Students (2 points)

Not a racist? Most white people do not consider themselves to be racist or to condone racism. Yet, with so many people saying or believing they are NOT racist, how can there still be racism? In this campus dialogue, we will talk about what racism is, how it is perpetuated and why so many white people do not acknowledge or see racism in America today. If you are confident that you are NOT a racist, this dialogue is for you. If you believe yourself to be against racism, but don’t know how to talk about or explain racism, this dialogue is for you. This will be facilitated by WGSS Professor and Chair Shannon Winnbst and WGSS Professor Jennifer Suchland.

HSPB Service Snowman (2 points)

Want to give a kid a reason to smile? Want to make a child’s holiday season? HSPB is throwing a two-week long event from November 21 – December 2 called Service Snowman. In Torres, Park-Stradley, Smith-Steeb, Taylor Tower, and the Kuhn House there will be a snowman hanging up in the lobby. All you have to do is grab a tag, go out and buy the gift on the tag and return it to any of the designated locations above. It is a perfect thing to do over thanksgiving day break! Go out and make a little kids holiday season! You will get 2 points for participating and donating a gift.

The boys’ lives take very different paths, as one becomes a Rhodes Scholar and the other is serving a life sentence for murder. Join us to discuss the book, as well as the role mentors and community leaders play in shaping the lives of young people. We will be joined by Joshua Bates, of the Kirwan Institute for the study of Race and Ethnicity. Joshua Bates is Social Policy Analyst at the Kirwan Institute. His research is focused on urban poverty, juvenile justice issues, community trauma, and program evaluation. Dinner will be provided. RSVP here.

Edify will aim to inform the Ohio State community of the niceness of our 21st century education system. Our three speakers will bring with them years of experience working with underprivileged communities in Columbus and will attempt to highlight the educative experience that these communities face.
Their talks will highlight several creative ways that organizations have attempted to “edify” those who lack the means for a good education and some ways that education has changed and continues to transform as society advances.

An Evening with Hershel Greenblat, Holocaust Survivor and Refugee (2 points)

Learn how Hershel became an American after surviving the Holocaust. He will speak about his family’s story of survival, his experiences making his way as a refugee in the U.S., and growing up in Atlanta during the Civil Rights movement. Dinner will be served.

OUAB Event: Breaking the Silence with Edward Snowden (2 points)

Snowden is a former National Security Agency contractor who leaked classified documents from the NSA in 2013 which revealed details surrounding a domestic surveillance program. As a result, he is facing three felony charges. He will be live-streaming to Ohio State’s campus on Nov. 30 from Russia, where he has been granted asylum. If you were not able to get tickets, there will be a “standby” line day of the event.

You can come alone or already with a team (3-4 people). Winning team is getting Russia-related prizes (no, it’s not a bear).

The week of November 14-18, 2016, marks the 16th annual celebration of International Education Week. A joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, International Education Week is an opportunity to promote a broader understanding of world cultures. Monday 11/14 5:30-6:30 in Enarson 202: Peace Corps application workshop. Come to learn more about the process of joining to the Peace Corps and find out how to build a great resume before the time comes to apply.

Tuesday 11/15 5-6 in Kuhn 201: the Peace Corps and Public Health. Come to learn about the various public health projects that the Peace Corps is involved in all over the world.

Thursday 11/17 4:30-5:30: Postgraduate service panel featuring the Peace Corps, Teach for America, and City Year. Are you interested in spending time volunteering after you graduate? Come to this roundtable discussion to learn about some of the most popular options for Ohio State graduates.

OUAB Event: Breaking the Silence with Edward Snowden (2 points)

Snowden is a former National Security Agency contractor who leaked classified documents from the NSA in 2013 which revealed details surrounding a domestic surveillance program. As a result, he is facing three felony charges. He will be live-streaming to Ohio State’s campus on Nov. 30 from Russia, where he has been granted asylum. This event is sold out however, we secured a number of tickets for IA and so look for more information as to how you can get one of those tickets closer to the event.

On October 25th, IA will be hosting its monthly journal club; these discussions will incorporate both science and international affairs components. You will be sent one research article and 1-2 current event readings or short videos about a particular subject, which you are expected to read or watch before journal club. There will be a short presentation about the topic, followed by a discussion.
