Avoidance of inequality is one of the important social values which have been championed for a long time.  This ethical judgment has become particularly relevant in the contemporary world both (1) because of the growing visibility of persistent inequality, and (2) because of a greater understanding of the need to justify social features that conflict with our values, especially in democratic societies. Hosted by No Lost Generation at OSU this event features a panel about the refugee crisis occurring in the Middle East/Levantine region and the city of Columbus’s role in providing sanctuary for those affected. This panel will include an expert on the region (Professor Daniel Silverman), members of a Columbus area refugee services organization, and a local student refugee. We hope to bring more awareness to the topic by discussing the events that have catalyzed such a widespread crisis. We will also discuss how the current state of the refugee crisis influences the Columbus community and how it may affect you.

Holocaust Seder (2 points)

This event is designed to show the struggles of the Holocaust and the harrowing events that came with it, through the Jewish Passover tradition of Seder. This is done in part through readings by people who lived through the Holocaust, some Holocaust historians, lots of symbolism, and plenty of discussion. “Seder” is the Hebrew word for order and, in case you didn’t know, is the introductory meal to the celebration of Passover, to which there is a very specific order in which food is served and blessings are made. Food for the Seder will be provided by Hillel.

Hocking Hill Trip (3 points)

Come join us as we go on a trip to Hocking Hills State Park! We will be leaving at 10am from the Ohio Union roundabout and taking an hour bus ride to the park. Make sure you eat a big breakfast or park a lunch and wear clothes that can get dirty. Some snacks will be provided on the bus but please pack water. Cool signs to see at Hocking Hills include: Old Man’s Cave,  Cedar Falls, Ash Cave, and Rose Lake. There will be quite a bit of hiking involved, so be prepared! If you are interested, sign up here! We are reworking the mentoring program from the past so current 2nd years, it will be different than your 1st year experience. If you are willing to serve as a mentor please complete this application no later than April 2nd.

Before World War Two, Poland’s 3.5 million Jews made the country the epicenter of the Jewish world. Today less than 20,000 Jews live there. Due to the Holocaust and ensuing Soviet era, Poland’s remaining Jews hid their identity from their children. With the fall of Communism in 1989 a young generation of Jews began learning their long-buried ancestry. The Return focuses on four women in their 20’s who face the unique challenge of trying to create an identity in a vacuum, with little knowledge of their heritage. Refugee Advocacy Training (2 points)

Hosted by Refuge, a newly formed student organization at OSU and Central Ohio Solidarity with Refugees and Immigrants, this training aims to look at the economic implications of refugees in the United States, how the vetting process works, what the resettlement process entrails and how to advocate for refugees at home and abroad. A guest speaker who plans to share a personal account about life as a newly resettled refugee.  What Does the Refugee and Immigrant Experience Really Look Like?

Staff from the Columbus Refugee and Immigration Services (CRIS) will join IA to talk about what the process looks like for immigrants and refugees, discuss what unique challenges facing those new to the US, and talk about the settlement process and what services organizations like CRIS provide. With immigration policy front and center right now, this informal program seeks to shed light on the experience and answer any questions you may have. Jimmy Johns will be provided!
Islamophobia: Causes and Consequences, and How to Counter It in Daily Life (2 points)

This program will be a collaboration between the OSU student organization, Crosswalk Outreach to the Homeless and Dr. Stephanie Moulton, of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs. One of Crosswalk Outreach’s goals is to combat the stigmatization of people who are homeless by educating others and inviting them to learn with the club. This program will educate attendees about the bigger picture of poverty and homelessness, as well as introduce students to opportunities involving Crosswalk Outreach.

Islamophobia: Causes and Consequences, and How to Counter It in Daily Life (2 points)

 Reflection on the President’s Executive Orders on Immigration (2 points)

Alan C. Michaels, dean of Moritz College of Law, will moderate as professors David S. Bloomfield, Ruth Colker, Mohamed S. Helal, and Peter Shane (left) will speak in a panel-style conversation on President Trump’s recent executive orders on immigration. Bloomfield is an immigration law specialist. Helal is an international law scholar. Colker and Shane are scholars in constitutional law. The panel includes two Mershon affiliates: Helal, whose research sits at the intersection between public international law and international relations theory, and Shane, an authority on separation of powers who has organized conferences on cybersecurity and online democracy. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to attend. This event is sponsored by the Moritz College of Law.

One of their signature programs is the Signature Lunch Series, which feature high-profile international speakers exploring a variety of global topics. This event brings together professionals from various fields throughout the city. IA has the opportunity to take a small group of students to this lunch which is an incredible learning and networking opportunity. The cost is $25 per person which IA would cover however, you must be completely sure you would be available before signing up because once we commit, you would be responsible for the $25 would you no longer be able to attend.
