Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) and closely related Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) are found in tomatoes worldwide and can cause significant losses. ToMV and TMV are considered to be different viruses based on genetic, protein and host range differences. Several strains of ToMV causing different symptoms have been identified in tomatoes. Quick immunostrip diagnostic assays currently available do not distinguish between ToMV and TMV. ToMV can be seedborne and both viruses spread very easily through mechanical transmission by grafting or contaminated tools and workers. These viruses are not spread by insect vectors. Effective control strategies consist of scouting, planting resistant varieties, and sanitation of seeds, soil, tools, workers, and plants.
