Sherman D. Hanna is a Professor in the Human Sciences Department at Ohio State University, in the the Consumer Sciences Program. He received a B.S. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in consumer economics from Cornell University. He has been the advisor for 37 Ph.D. students. His research has covered many topics in personal finance, including household saving, credit use, retirement adequacy, investment choices, risk tolerance, and racial/ethnic differences in financial decisions. He is an associate editor of the research journal Financial Planning Review, and was the founding editor of the Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning. He was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Council on Consumer Interests and also of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education, and received the Financial Educator of the Year award from the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education. He has received 17 national awards for research papers. He received the first Career Legacy Award from the CFP Board Center for Financial Planning, October 2022. In a 2015 article in the Journal of Financial Planning, he was listed as the most prolific author in core financial planning journals during 1985 to 2014.
