Family and Consumer Sciences Research: A Compendium of Journals

Family and Consumer Sciences Research:
A Compendium of Journals

Note: this file is based on the original compendium published in 1992, with some updating provided
by the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Institute at Iowa State University in 1995. Sherman
Hanna converted this to HTML format and added some web links in May, 1996. The original
file from 1992 was used, with the updates from Iowa State inserted. Some of the information may
be out-of-date, because journals listed in 1992 did not respond to requests in 1995.

This compendium of journals relevant to Family and Consumer Economics is a product of NCR-52 Family Economics Committee and the Family Economics Research Group, Agricultural
Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. NCR-52 Family Economics is a regional
committee under the auspices of the State Agricultural Experiment Stations and the Cooperative
State Research Service, USDA. The information was compiled by personnel of the Family
Economics Research Group. The NCR-52 committee expresses special appreciation to Dr. Mark
Lino of the Family Economics Research Group for his dedicated efforts in collecting the
information in this compendium, and to the editors of the journals represented herein for
providing that information. Production of the publication was supported by grants from the
Family Economics-Home Management Section and the Research Section of the American Home
Economics Association.

About This Compendium:

The purpose of this compendium is to help people prepare their research for submission to a
journal. There were 131 journals relevant to family and consumer economics surveyed. A mail
questionnaire was sent to the editor of each journal in July 1991. A letter reminding editors to
return the questionnaire was mailed a few weeks later. A second mail questionnaire was sent to
nonresponding journal editors in September 1991.

Responses were received from 92 journal editors (a response rate of 70%). Of these, 82
completed the questionnaire, 4 indicated their journal did not accept outside manuscripts, 3
believed the journal covered topics not in the realm of family or consumer economics, and 3
stated that the journal had ceased publication either temporarily or permanently. The four
journals that do not accept outside manuscripts are Economic Review (Federal Reserve Bank of
Kansas City), Family Economics Review, Federal Reserve Bulletin, and Social Security Bulletin.

The following information was collected from each journal:
Sponsor: Journal’s affiliation, usually a professional association or university.
Appropriate topics: Consumer education, consumer/family economics, consumer/family finance,
consumer/family law, consumer/family policy, consumer/family psychology, consumer/family
sociology, financial counseling/planning, or other related topical area.
Primary audience: Academic, practitioner, government, or other category.

Frequency of issue: Number of issues each year.
Copies per issue: Paid and nonpaid subscriptions.
Type of review: Double blind (authors and reviewers unknown to each other), single blind
(authors known to reviewers or reviewers known to authors), open (authors and reviewers known
to each other), or editorial (review by in-house editors only).
Acceptance rate: Percent of manuscripts submitted in 1990 that were eventually published or are
very likely to be published.
Average review time: Amount of time that passes between the time a journal first receives a
manuscript and when the authors are notified of the results of the first review.
Number of reviewers: Number of people, excluding in-house editors, who review a submitted
manuscript.
Percentage of invited articles: Percent of articles published in 1990 that were requested
specifically by the editor or were from an annual conference or meeting.
Maximum page length and preferred range of pages: Length of a submitted manuscript, double
spaced, including tables, figures, references, and appendices.
Page charge to publish manuscript: If there is such a charge, the amount. Many journals noted
a submission fee. As submission fees were not asked for specifically, such fees are not reported
for all journals.
Manuscript guidelines: Where such guidelines could be obtained most easily; the journal, editor,
or elsewhere. Many journals noted a particular style guideline. Because guidelines were not
asked for specifically, these guidelines are not reported for all journals.
