I decided to chose one of my succulents for this post because I feel that it represents my academic interests. Flowers have always been really important to me because my middle name is rose and my first name is a flower of some kind. I have always love the different colors and smells of flowers, because they remind me of how pure nature can be.

Additionally, to me flowers represent how quick something can change, and how easy it is to ruin something so beautiful. We really do take this life for granted sometimes, and I always try to get as much as I can out of every day. This goes along with my passion for helping others. I always strive to be better and learn from my mistakes, so that others can use my knowledge too.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. To get answers to specific questions, please email eportfolio@osu.edu. Delete these instructions and add your own post.]

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc

  • I have a goal to study abroad during my time at OSU. While I am unsure about where I want to go and what I want to learn on my trip, I have always loved traveling and exploring new places. Traveling abroad will allow me to learn more about another culture, and the customs involved. I will able to appreciate the diversity around me, and explore people unique differnces

Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.

  • I have always wanted to travel abroad and learn about another c immunities government and criminal justice system. At Ohio State, there is a class I can take where I would travel to Rwanda and learn more about their community. I would get to experience their culture, learn about the genocide, and further my education in criminal justice.

Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.

  • I have made it a goal for myself to take at least 15 credit hours every semester. Considering I am double majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology, this will help me graduate and obtain my degree on time. Also, having 15 credit hours every semester (or more) is enough course work to make me busy, but not overwhelmed to the point where I am too stressed to focus.

Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

This year, I have taken on the role of Co-chair for the Community Activities Committee. While this is not the biggest leadership role out there, the Community Activities Committee is still an amazing way for me to gain more leadership experience. I am already learning more about what it takes to run a committee and everything that comes along with it.

Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

  • Every summer, I have a goal to participate with my church in service. This can be virtual service, or in person service. Either way, vow to serve my community in any way that I can. Additionally, I always try to stay aware, and whenever I am able to I spend my free time serving others.

At the end of my senior year, I was allowed the opportunity to shadow a profession that interested me. This “Senior Project” as my school called it, is designed to provided applicable seniors with the opportunity to explore their individual interests and career opportunities with a professional, or employee in that profession. For my project I decided to shadow Detective Sargent Dan Kalk, from the Aurora Police Department, in hopes I would gain experience with the court systems, while also learning more about what a typical work day looks like for an officer. The image above was taken at BCI, also known as The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. There, I was given a tour of the Firearms and Tools Unit, the Chemistry Labs, the Instruments Lab, Prints Lab, DNA Lab, and the Cyber Crime Unit. It was a very informational tour, and an amazing experience. This photo, is myself in a mock crime scene, set up for one of the classes this agency offers.

This experience is important to me, because it helped solidify what I hope to study in college. I always knew that I was interested in criminal justice, and criminology, however before this project I thought I wanted to study forensic psychology. After the two weeks concluded, I knew that I wanted to be more hands on while working on cases. My plans for the future are to study psychology and criminal justice, and possibly do an internship within the field.

This past summer, I participated in my church’s mission trip. My family and I have been going on these trips for the past four years, but this past year was especially special. We traveled to Arizona, stayed on a Native American Reservation, voluntarily helped out their community, all while also learning about the history of the lands. Even though the trip was only a week, I learned and experienced so much, that I came back a whole new person.

One of the projects that I was part of, was tearing down an abandoned house.  This was very emotional for all of us, because the family had quite literally got up and left. As you can see in this picture, I was in charge of getting all of the trash put into trash bags and out of the house, (The house was filled, and I mean filled, with trash). As we were digging through, we started to find pictures of family members who had lived in the home. This really opened my eyes to how special life truly is, and how much we really don’t know about people. It felt like we were invading these peoples personal lives, which is why I find it so important to me. Finding something as small as pictures of people, had such a big impact on how I view life. I go into everyday thinking about what people go through, and what they most likely aren’t telling us.

About Me

Hello! My name is Liana Cirino and I’m from Solon, Ohio (25 minutes outside of Cleveland). Currently, I am Psychology major with interests in criminology and criminal justice. I am involved in the Mount Leadership Society scholars program and hope to join a fun club team on campus. In high school, I was a competitive dancer and worked at Play Day Cafe, which is an indoor playground for children. I also was actively involved in my church, and traveled on three mission trips. We traveled to Honduras, Texas, and Arizona, working with local churches in need. In addition, I have been on the Buddy Cruise, a non-profit conference at sea, that promotes awareness and inclusion for individuals with special needs. I hope to travel abroad one semester to learn more about criminal justice systems in other countries.
