Unconscious Bias Certification

CFAES is partnering with the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Nursing to bring the Cultural Intelligence Center to Ohio State to provide our units with Unconscious Bias Certification.  This certification prepares you for facilitating the “Culture Matters” workshop for faculty, staff, and students in CFAES.  Although this training is complementary to the Cultural Intelligence Training Level 1 Certification provided in 2013, you do not have to be a Cultural Intelligence Facilitator to apply.

Space is limited.  Applications are being accepted until August 11.  The training will be in Columbus on September 14 and 15, location to be determined.  There is no cost for the training for your unit other than mileage and overnight if needed. You will be expected to facilitate at least one session for the college per year.

If interested, complete the online application.

Contact Kathy Lechman, lechman.1@osu.edu, if you have any questions.

Teaching Post Election

In the days leading up to and following the presidential election, our country has seen discord and, in some unfortunate cases, verbal and physical violence. As part of the teaching community at Ohio State, we know that these emotions can enter into our class interactions. We also know from research that making room for diverse perspectives and using inclusive pedagogies strengthens us as a community and promotes deeper learning.

Ohio State is an institution that values diversity and inclusion in everything we do as well as acting with integrity by proceeding with honesty, fairness, and treating everyone with respect.  In recent messages, President Drake reminds us, “It is incumbent upon us all to rebuild the sense of inclusion and support that has been key to the vibrant and engaged experience that is Ohio State.”

The University Center for the Advancement of Teaching continues to be committed to diverse, inclusive and civil classrooms. Below is a handful of resources to help teachers productively navigate these conversations in their courses. We also recommend that you review UCAT’s bibliography on teaching the election, which was assembled earlier this fall.

As always, consultants from UCAT are available to work with you and/or your department to address these issues, and any other issues that may be shaping the teaching and learning environment in which we collectively strive for inclusive excellence.

Equity and Inclusion – Events and Activities

CFAES Survey
The CFAES Offices of Equity and Inclusion and Human Resources wants to hear from you.

As you heard from interim Dean King in his November 15 message, our college tragically lost one of our students over the last few weeks.  In addition, there has been a rise in activism and incidents of harassments and hate across the country and on OSU Campus, maybe in your communities.  Given these recent events, the upcoming holidays and the end of the semester we wanted to check in.  Please let us know how you are doing.  This anonymous Qualtrics survey will take 3 minutes or less.  All responses are anonymous unless you request a follow up.

Wishing you the best as you move toward the end of the semester and into the winter holiday season.
