I-Corps@Ohio Program Request for Proposals

Is your technology ready to assess its market potential?  The I-Corps@Ohio program is an outstanding opportunity for PIs, graduate students, and post-docs to learn if the real-world is ready for your technology.  Shauna Brummet will mentor individuals through the application process and the workshop series next summer.  The deadline for submission of the application is January 16, 2018.  There is time to prepare the brief application.  Just a few questions, submitted online regarding your technology, your product or service, and market information, which Shauna will help you obtain.

CFAES has been very successful in winning spots in these cohorts.  Our teams have included:

  • Swine Flu Vaccine – Aradhya Gourapura, Santosh Dhakal, Shauna Brummet – 2015 – resulted in technology licensing
  • Guayule Latex (EnergyEne) – Katrina Cornish, Zhenyu Li, Tom Fontana, Shauna Brummet – 2016 – resulted in follow-on funding
  • Encapsulation Nanotechnology – Jon Parquette, Bob Tabita, Sriram Satagopan, Yuan Sun, Bill Timmons, Shauna Brummet – 2016 – resulted in pivot in market and further research development, continued funding
  • Bioproducts – Teddy Ezeji, Chris Okonkwo, Rob Yenne, Shauna Brummet – 2016 – resulted in pivot in market and further research development

All of these teams found the experience very useful, leading them to a deeper understanding of their technology’s potential in the market – to solve problems. Please let Shauna know if you are interested in pursuing this opportunity. She can be reached at: brummet.1@osu.edu or 330-263-3716.

The I-Corps@Ohio program incorporates Lean Startup, Customer Discovery and Business Model Canvas methodologies to accelerate commercialization of technologies from Ohio universities and colleges while expanding the business acumen and networks of faculty and students across the state. The resulting companies will drive sustainable technology-based economic development in Ohio.

You have until January 16, 2018, to submit your application for funding provided by the Ohio Department of Higher Education to be selected to participate in the 2018 I-Corps@Ohio cohort. Form your team now and submit your university technology using the online questionnaire to begin the process of taking your technology from lab to market.

Construction Notice – Ag Admin

The Agricultural Administration Building will be undergoing renovations beginning today, Nov. 6. These projects will be ongoing until summer and will have some impact on occupants and visitors.

  1. Fire System replacement project.  Begins Monday, November 6 and should conclude by April 27.
  2. CFAES office renovation project – The former AEDE administrative space on the 1st floor plus conference room 105 and ACEL space on the 2nd floor. This project should kick-off after January 1, but don’t be surprised if the contractor begins mid-December!  The project should be complete by summer.
  3. Yet to come in 2018 – Restroom renovations on the ground floor and first floor main corridor!

The Fire System replacement project will kick-off Monday, November 6 with the abatement portion of the project.  There will be two areas affected with this part of the project; phase 1 will begin on the ground floor in the short hallway with the small restrooms.  Phases 2, 3, and 4 will be the main hallway on the 1st floor, which runs in front of room 100, Academic Affairs.  The contractor has worked with us to minimize potential access issues, but understand this work will be relatively quick and again, is important to head toward a safe building environment!

The abatement schedule:

Phase 1 = November 6 – November 10
Phase 2 = November 10 – we will be closed for Veteran’s Day observance
Phase 3 = November 13 – November 17
Phase 4 = November 20 – November 30 but hopefully done before this date

Impacts:

  • Beginning Monday, Nov. 6, ground floor residents who park in the east Ag Admin parking lot, will need to access the building from the north entrance doors (closest to Chadwick Arboretum) on the east side of the building.
  • Ground floor residents will not have access to restrooms on the ground floor from November 6 – November 10 – please use the 1st floor restrooms.

Open Enrollment Opportunities for Current, Newly Eligible Employees

Open Enrollment for 2018 benefits started Nov. 1 and ends Nov. 14, 2017. Benefits-eligible employees can use myBenefitsMentor in Employee Self Service to compare potential costs between available medical plan options.

Also, all employees who are newly eligible for benefits in the last quarter of the calendar year have two important enrollment opportunities: for both 2017 benefits and 2018 benefits. Those employees must first make benefit elections for 2017 benefits before enrolling in 2018 benefits.

New employees have 31 days from their hire date to enroll in 2017 benefits and most elections they make for 2017 will automatically carry over to 2018. However, if they want to make changes for 2018 (Health Election Form) or enroll in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA election form), they must do so by Dec. 19, 2017.

What you need to do:

  • Learn about Open Enrollment, including recorded and live webinars, at hr.osu.edu/oe.
  • New employees to enroll in both 2017 benefits and 2018 benefits.
