OAWWA Diversity In Water: Dr. Willie Harper

Join Ohio Section American Water Works Association for the next installment of its Diversity in Water virtual speaker series. The goal of the series is to highlight diverse voices in the water industry and provide career advice for young professionals and students. The speakers discuss their career path, how their identity has impacted their journey, and how they see diversity playing a role in the future of the water industry.

Dr. WIllie HarperThe event will take place on May 13th at 5:30pm and feature Professor Willie Harper. Dr. Harper is a professor of environmental engineering and science at the Air Force Institute of Technology. He has transitioned from a role as an industry engineer into academia where his research focuses on how we can use microorganisms to detect and degrade contaminants. Dr. Harper has taught numerous courses in water quality, microbiology, and environmental policy and he has served as a visiting faculty member at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and at the Denmark Technical University.

TEDxOhioStateUniversity – Horizons

TEDxOhioStateUniversity was founded in 2011 and hosted its first annual event in Spring of 2012. This year the organization will host its 10th annual main event and first ever fully virtual TEDx conference, Horizons. Although 2020 has posed challenges for everyone, TEDxOhioStateUniversity is looking forward and is ready to cross new horizons this spring.

The conference will consist of critically selected speakers who spread their ideas and innovations through short, yet powerful talks to a vast audience. The event features ideas from students, faculty, and alumni of the university. You can find a list of speakers on the organization’s website.

The event will take place on March 13th and 14th at 1:00pm each day. Registration is open and completely free!

TEDxOhioStateUniversity – Magnify

TEDxOhioStateUniversity will hold its annual event on February 22. The theme this year is Magnify. This theme comes from desire to highlight groundbreaking concepts as well as scrutinize the seemingly smallest of details on the TEDx stage.

There will be 12 speakers – a mix of professors, grad students, and undergrads who are all Ohio State affiliated speaking on a wide variety of topics spanning from animation techniques to cellular stress response.

Light breakfast and light lunch will be provided. On Saturday, February 22, registration and breakfast will begin at 10:30am. The conference will conclude at 4:15pm.

Tickets are $15 for students or $20 for non-students. Ticket sales end Saturday, February 22 at 10:00am.

Chemical Abstracts Service

On Thursday, November 15, the Chemistry and Biochemistry Club will be hosting a representative from the Chemical AbstractsService (CAS) to talk about CAS as well as job opportunities, both full time and part time.

The speaker, Molly Strausbaugh, leads a team of ~100 chemists and chemical engineers at CAS. As a division of the American Chemical Society, CAS works to partner with organizations to help solve business, content, technology, and resource challenges.  The custom solutions CAS can deliver enable discovery and innovation. Many opportunities exist beyond the lab for chemistry and chemical engineering graduates. Molly leverages her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and an MBA to serve as a leader and active participant in global chemistry activities.

The event will be Thursday, November 15th, from 6:30pm-7:30pm in CBEC 330.

There will be catering from Panera Bread.
