Info Session: Discovery PREP Program at OSUCOM

The NIH-funded Discovery Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) at The Ohio State University College of Medicine is excited to announce a virtual information session on December 15 at 7pm. During the event, Dr. Candice Askwith, Faculty Director of Discovery PREP, will introduce Discovery PREP and answer questions.

The Discovery PREP program is designed to help prepare recent baccalaureate graduates for success in pursuit of a career as a biomedical scientist. Individuals from groups underrepresented in the biomedical workforce are strongly encouraged to apply, including students from racial and ethnic groups shown to be underrepresented nationally and individuals with disabilities.

Discovery PREP provides individuals with the opportunity to obtain the intensive research experience necessary to gain admission to, and succeed in, a Biomedical PhD program. The program is a competitive, one-year PREP that provides:

  • A PAID research experience in a laboratory with a research mentor in Neuroscience, Cancer Biology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Immunology, or Physiology.
  • Individual mentoring
  • Assistance with application preparation for PhD graduate programs
  • Orientation and social activities
  • Seminars and journal clubs
  • Career development workshops
  • Opportunities to travel and network with scientists throughout the nation

DOE Fuel Cell Technologies Fellow

The Fuel Cell Technologies Fellow opportunity with the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office is now accepting applications. This is an opportunity for individuals who have a degree in the physical sciences, so may be of interest to recent CBC graduates.

What will I be doing? As a member of the team, you will both learn and contribute across the range of activities associated with managing applied research within the Fuel Cell Technologies Program. The Fuel Cells Technology Program activities will include monitoring project progress and milestones; reviewing and analyzing project progress reports and other technical reports; and engaging with project researchers. Key areas of research and development within the Fuel Cell Technologies Program include catalysts, membranes, membrane electrode assemblies, stacks, and balance of plant components.

You will collaborate on the office’s Fuel Cell Technologies Program, which focuses on developing fuel cells which are among the most promising technologies that are expected to transform the energy sector. They are highly efficient, fuel flexible, and offer diverse benefits. In particular, they are affordable, clean, and reliable fuel cell technologies that convert hydrogen to electrical power for a wide variety of applications, including transportation (automobiles, buses, trucks, rail, maritime) and stationary power generation (mid-scale electric power plants, backup power, small-scale distributed power plants for buildings).

You will receive a competitive stipend, an allowance to offset the costs of health insurance, research travel and materials up to $10,000, and relocation expenses reimbursement up to $5,000.

Responsibilities:

  • Mastery in Manus Bio SOPs and their execution involving reagent, media, and lab consumable preparation.  Ability to train others to execute these tasks to the same high standard
  • Maintain stellar lab organization to ensure operational excellence within the R&D team
  • Maintain and facilitate use of our in-house inventory platforms to a highly organized standard
  • Order and stock lab supplies and consumables.  Maintain and later build relationships with outside vendors
  • Maintain laboratory equipment to pristine condition and facilitate repairs when needed
  • Develop ability to design and implement modifications to protocols and procedures that increase efficiency of Manus Bio SOPs

Postbaccalaureate Program to Diversify STEM: Stowers Research Scholar

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research (Kansas City, Missouri) is now accepting applications for Stowers Research Scholars, a mentored 1-year postbaccalaureate research fellowship. Through guided research experience and academic career mentoring, this program aims to increase the number of NIH-defined underrepresented students in fundamental biological research.  This year the program is accepting up to three students for the inaugural class.

This opportunity is open to US citizens or permanent residents from diverse backgrounds with a BA or BS in a STEM field who are interested in pursuing graduate education in basic biological sciences. Compensation is highly competitive and prior laboratory experience is not required. (Bachelor’s degree must be conferred prior to the program start date.)
