Job Opportunity – Molecular Lab Analyst

The Ohio Water Microbiology Laboratory at The Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey in Columbus, Ohio is in need of a student contractor. This student would assist with analyzing water samples using molecular methods for DNA from specific animal hosts (for microbial source tracking, as well as DNA from bacteria responsible for harmful algal blooms and toxin production. This position will start immediately and can be full-time or part-time during the school year and then full-time during the summer. Student will be expected to assist in sample receipt, log in, and initial processing steps, as well as perform other duties.

Students who wish to apply should have an advanced knowledge of molecular biology and/or microbiology, as well as experience with molecular techniques through course work and/or previous related lab experiences. Compensation is $21.32 per hour if above criteria are met.

Job Opportunity – General Lab Analyst

The Ohio Water Microbiology Laboratory at The Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Water Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey in Columbus, Ohio is in need of a student contractor to assist with general laboratory duties and environmental sample analyses. This position will start in May/June 2019 and will be up to full-time during the summer with a potential to continue as part-time into the fall and winter. Main duties include processing environmental samples for indicator bacteria and viruses using basic filtering and plating techniques, preparing media and reagents, and general upkeep and maintenance of lab and equipment.

Students who wish to apply should have a general background knowledge in biology, environmental science, and/or microbiology. Essential skills include ability to keep accurate records, follow established protocol, and the use of common computer software. Compensation is $13.70 per hour if above criteria are met.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at The University of Texas Southwest

Application Deadline: February 9, 2019

The objective of this program is to provide an intensive research training experience that leads to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of basic answers to current questions in the biological sciences. Fellows will pursue individual research projects under the direction of a member of the graduate school faculty. Lectures and seminars by faculty members will supplement the research experience.

Each fellowship award carries with it $4,000 in support for the 10-week period beginning June 3, 2019 through August 9, 2019. This support is taxable. If a fellow requires housing, the costs will be covered by the program; however, fellows are responsible for paying for their own travel expenses and will not be reimbursed by the SURF Program.

AMGEN Scholars at UT Southwestern

Every year, the Amgen Scholars U.S. Program provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students from across the U.S. with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at many of the nation’s premier educational institutions. Currently, thirteen institutions in the U.S. host the summer research program. The Amgen Foundation has committed $74 million over sixteen years to the global Amgen Scholars Program to make this opportunity possible for thousands of students. The UT Southwestern Amgen Scholars Program will provide an exceptional 10 week intensive hands-on research program which will include a trip to Los Angeles to attend the Amgen Scholars summer biotechnology symposium.

As Amgen Scholars, students will have the opportunity to:
•  Take part in important institution research projects, gain hands-on lab experience and contribute to the advancement of science;
•  Interact with and receive guidance from faculty mentors, including some of the nation’s top academic scientists; and
•  Participate in engaging scientific seminars, workshops and other networking events.

Airfare to and from Dallas will be covered by the program. Each fellowship award carries with it $4,000 in support for the 10-week period beginning June 3, 2019 through August 9, 2019.

Student Grant Competition

The Public Narrative Collaborative Global Arts & Humanities Discovery Theme is offering small grants up to $500 for work dealing with public narrative for undergraduate and graduate students graduating in spring and summer of 2019. 
 
The Public Narrative Collaborative supports broad definitions of public and of narrative. Its work is grounded in the cultural pervasiveness and widely-acknowledged power of stories and storytelling. Once thought to reside safely in the domains of literature, history, and folklore, narrative is now recognized as significant in just about every sphere of human activity: in politics, medicine, religion, education, law, business, sports, the art world, and on and on.  In addition, narratives appear in a range of media: print, radio, film, television, comics, theater, the digital, painting, sculpture, and curated art exhibitions.  Furthermore, narratives have countless purposes, some of which frequently overlap: reporting, explaining, interpreting, evaluating, entertaining, socializing, persuading, and more.  Narrative, in short, is a way of knowing and of doing.
 
PNC would like to make clear that “telling” in this context is not limited to verbal or written language, in fact proposals working in media including but not limited to visual art, sound, performance, moving image will be welcomed.

  • A brief general description (250 words maximum) of your project.
  • A brief description of how the interests of PNC align with the form, theme, or subject of your project.

Indianapolis Teaching Fellows

Historically, high-need students in Indianapolis have not had equal access to an education that adequately prepares them for college and career. Indianapolis Teaching Fellows trains recent college graduates to become exceptional certified teachers in high-need subject areas. The fast-paced summer training program focuses on the essential skills that teachers need most to start strong. Fellows will repeatedly practice foundational classroom management and instructional techniques, receive direct feedback from skilled coaches, and pass a series of evaluations to be eligible to start teaching in the fall.
