Community Outreach

Buckeyes in the community!

OSBP has partnered with schools in the local community to bring science and fun to Columbus elementary and middle school students! Throughout the year, in the fall and spring semesters, we attend sixth, seventh, and eighth grade classes at Hilltonia Middle School in an effort to engage students in science education programs. Typically, outreach days involve teaching, moderating high energy activities and demonstrations, and are an opportunity to serve as a role model and mentor to a middle school student! Past outreach days have included activities such as Photosynthesis Phun- an activity designed to get students thinking about energy and the environment, DNA Necklaces- who doesn’t want to extract their own DNA and make a necklace out of it?, Chemical vs. Physical Changes- a chance to see how magical science can be with changing colors and fizzing solutions, Let’s get Moving: Exploring Kinetic vs. Potential Energy- an action packed day with ramps, rolling objects, and a whole lot of energy, and Exploding Pumpkins – pumpkins+ rockets+ liquid nitrogen…. need I say more?

To make an impact on the community and have successful outreach days, volunteers are always needed! If this seems like something you may be interested in simply reach out and send an email to the OSBP Outreach chair, Ariana Shannon at shannon.225@osu.edu and they can give you all the information you’ll need.
