Presidential Award Winner!

Congratulations to Walter Zahurancik, in the lab of Dr. Zucai Suo, for being awarded a Spring 2017 Presidential Fellowship!

Walter joined OSBP after completing his BS degree in Biochemistry here at Ohio State in 2012. His work in the Suo lab has focused on the mechanisms of multiple enzymes that participate in DNA replication and repair.  The Presidential fellowship, which is the highest honor awarded by the graduate school, will support Walter during the final year of his thesis work. We are proud to add Walter to the list of many successful Presidential fellows in OSBP!

Presidential Fellowship Winner!

From the Desk of Thomas Magliery:

Please join me in congratulating Austin Raper for receiving a Presidential Fellowship in the Spring 2016 competition.  The Presidential Fellowship, the highest award given by the Graduate School for outstanding scholarship, supports the fellow in the final year of dissertation work.  Only 24 of OSU’s over 10,000 graduate students are recognized in each biannual competition.

Austin was a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Mount Union in Biochemistry, and he started at Ohio State in 2013.  Austin joined the lab of Zucai Suo in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry.  He studies mechanisms of DNA damage tolerance and repair while pioneering new applications of single molecule techniques.

Congratulations, Austin!

New CGS Representive

This upcoming year, Janie Frandsen will be our representative for the  Council of Graduate Students (CGS).

CGS is the official branch of student government that represents every graduate student at the main and satellite campuses.

It is our primary purpose to work towards a continual improvement of the graduate student experience at The Ohio State University.

CGS Officers, Committee Chairs and Delegates serve as staunch advocates in the process of crafting university policy-making decisions. Our competitive funding programs and “graduate-centered” programing support the personal and professional development of all graduate students.

Our Committee Chairs are considered department heads of the student government; they have their own budgets and are free to program (with consultation of the Executive Board) as they see fit. There is a high expectation on committees to program effectively in their domains during the academic year.

The University’s most involved and motivated students participate in  the executive level functions of the University by serving as delegates to the Council or as senators to the University Senate.

CGS delegates are elected from every graduate program and are responsible for communicating concerns and representing the opinions and interests of their constituents at our monthly meetings. Effective delegates strive to serve as key contacts and sources of information for the graduate students within their departments, their constituents.

University Senators are elected from each of 10 academic areas and are responsible for crafting, debating and voting on legislation that governs the University through committees and regular meetings of the Senate. Senators should strive to be aware of the issues affecting their college and to fully understand the impact of policies that are enacted by the Senate.

Dr. Suo Collaborates with Biosortia

Our very own Chemistry professor, Dr. Zucai Suo, will be teaming up with Biosortia Pharmaceuticals on one of three new oncology research projects. The projects will investigate Biosortia’s unique libraries of consortia microbial compounds for potential drug discovery in pediatric cancer (neuroblastoma), liver cancer (Hepatitis C virus) and an alternative approach to combat tumor growth by stimulating a patient’s immune responses (immuno-oncology).

Dr. Suo will be researching natural product inhibitors for treating liver cancer and viral infections. Liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with a major cause if it being Hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV replicates exclusively in the liver and has chronically infected 170 to 300 million people worldwide. Dr. Suo’s past as The Jane Coffin Childs memorial Fund Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University Medical School, a member of the research team at Lilly which successfully developed an FDA and EU approved anti-Hepatitis C virus protease inhibitor based drug in collaboration with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and also his current role as a consultant with Gilead Sciences leave no reason to wonder why he was selected for this noteworthy role.

Presidential Fellowship Awarded to Christine Wachnowsky!

Please join me in congratulating Christine Wachnowsky for receiving a Presidential Fellowship in the Spring 2016 competition.  The Presidential Fellowship, the highest award given by the Graduate School for outstanding scholarship, supports the fellow in the final year of dissertation work.  Only 24 of OSU’s over 10,000 graduate students are recognized in each biannual competition.

Christine was an honors student in both Biochemistry and German at Allegheny College, and she started at Ohio State in 2012.  Christine joined the lab of Dr. Jimmy Cowan in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry.  Her work is largely focused on the biogenesis of iron sulfur cluster proteins, with a significant additional project on antimicrobial metallodrugs.
