This subalpine forest near Washington Pass in the North Cascades is representative of the type of habitat near the crest of the Cascade Mountains where hybridization is occurring. Douglas squirrels (Tamiasciurus douglasii) are found on the west side of the Cascade crest and red squirrels (T. hudsonicus) are found on the east side of the crest.
