Hemlock Woolly Adelgid: Preparing to Proactively Manage for Impacts to the Hocking Hills Region

Eastern hemlocks play a key role in Hocking County’s ecology and economy.  These trees however, are currently threatened by the 2013 discovery of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid at Cantwell Cliffs.  It has also been found at several other areas in southeast Ohio.  Join us for an evening program designed to introduce the potential threats, impacts, and management issues presented by the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid in the Hocking Hills Region.

The evening’s program will include the following speakers:

  • Jesse Webster, Forester, Great Smoky Mountains National Park:
    • How the Great Smoky Mountains have faced the invasion of Hemlock Wooly Adelgid and how they are managing for this pest
  • Dave Apsley, Natural Resources Specialist, Ohio State University Extension &
  • Tom Macy, Forest Health Program and Special Projects Administrator, Ohio Division of Forestry:
    • Current status of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid in Ohio, including the importance of hemlock trees to the Hocking Hills.
  • Heather Stehle, Executive Director, Crane Hollow Preserve and Hocking Hills Conservation Association Board Member
    • Questions and answers, wrap-up

  1. I am very happy to see that you were helping to take care of the Hemlock. I know where I am in Ohio it has started to become a problem, but I would be very saddened to lose any of the Great Smoky Mountains beauty of the trees.
