Background

Marc is currently a second year graduate student and co-advised by Dr. Peter Anderson and Dr. Michael Mill. He received his undergraduate degree in Materials Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University in 2014.

Research Projects:

Phase-Specific Nanoindentation of Hard-facing Alloys

A new high-nitrogen stainless steel (Nitromaxx) is being developed for nuclear power plant applications where excellent wear-resistance is required at room and elevated (350 °C) temperature. The high nitrogen is shown to impart several benefits, including increased interstitial solute content and decreased stacking fault energy in the FCC matrix, and increased volume fraction of nitride precipitates. The origin of the superior wear properties is examined by performing arrays of nanoindentations across polished cross sections at various temperatures, using an in-situ nanoindenter in a focused ion beam (FIB). The resulting hardness vs. depth data are analyzed statistically and correlated with the distinct FCC matrix, carbide, and nitride phases within the alloy. The variation in phase-specific hardness and deformation patterns around the indents provide insight to the origins of extraordinary wear resistance at room and elevated temperature.
