The CFAES Center for Education Abroad Team would like to wish safe travels to the 120 CFAES students traveling this summer to six different continents! This stellar group of students was awarded of $54,000 in CFAES Education Abroad Scholarship funds, a new record for one term.

Experience OSU for a Day Hosts & Fall Semester Schedules Needed!
Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The “Experience OSU for a Day” (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit. If you were a host last semester, we need your new schedule!

EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to class, the Oval, the Union, a room in Nosker House, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow). Hosting is open to any CFAES student who has completed at least one semester of classes at the Columbus campus. To sign up, simply fill out this form andemail it to Abby Motter at motter.109s@osu.edu. Feel free to contact Abby if you have questions.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity: Social Issues and Media Coverage
Research Description: This student will work with the Faculty Mentor to provide technical assistance with online based research study design. The student should be proficient with web hosting, web page creation, web page editing, and video file manipulation and editing.  The position will be available during the Spring Semester into the Summer Semester and entirety of the position will only be a few weeks long. The student will be assisting the Faculty Mentor for 10-20 hours a week.

Qualifications Needed: Web hosting, web page creation, web page editing, video file manipulation and editing are mandatory skills needed for this position. Minimum GPA is a 3.3. Students majoring in Communication or enrolled in the College of Engineering are preferred.

A resume including information about their skills and experience related to the needed skills should be attached, as well as the names, position, and contact information of three references. Applications are due by April 15, 2017.

CFAES Celebration of Students Tickets on Sale
Join us Thursday, April 6 for the 64th CFAES Celebration of Students (formerly known as the CFAES Recognition Program)! Let’s tell our CFAES story together! New to the event this year is a “Preface to Our Story” reception beginning at 4:30p.m. where all are welcome for mingling, hors d’oeuvres, and learning more about the accomplishments of our students across the college through various displays outside the Archie Griffin Ballroom in the Ohio Union. The banquet begins at 5:30 p.m. with an enhanced menu where vegetarian options are available in the buffet line. Parking is available for our guests and visitors in the Ohio Union parking garages. Suggested attire is business professional.

Tickets go on sale March 2 (required for only the banquet portion of the evening). The social hour is free. Find a committee member or stop in Ag Admin 100 or Kottman 210 to purchase your ticket for $10. Ticket prices will increase to $15 on March 30. For table reservations contact Dr. Marilyn Trefz (.2). Tables are available for $150 each (10 tickets at $10 each plus a $50 reservation fee) until March 29th. Ten CFAES students will be drawn from those who have reported their internships through the CFAES internship reporting form to win a FREE ticket to the 2017 CFAES Recognition Program. Agricultural Administration Auditorium 3:30-5:30 PM
Come for an afternoon of fun and painting. All participants will enjoy FREE snacks while they paint their own picture. An artist will instruct the participants to follow instructions to create a picture which mirrors the sample painting. Limited to 50 attendees, 12 seats reserved for Ohio State ATI participants. Apply for the 2017 IFAJ Alltech Young Leaders Award
If you’re an AAEA member, age 35 or younger, with a desire to witness South African agriculture in April 2017 – plus participate in an amazing young leader boot camp – apply by December 16 for a chance to represent the U.S. and possibly win a 1,000 Euro scholarship.

The 10 recipients of the 2017 IFAJ-Alltech Young Leader Award will participate in the unique Boot Camp training program from March 29 to April 1, 2017, near Pretoria, South Africa. The program includes leadership training, discussions and exercises with journalists from around the world, and a day of farm visits and professional skill development.

Sphinx Senior Class Honorary Recruitment
SPHINX Senior Class Honorary is now accepting applications for the prestigious membership of their next class, the 111th class. As the oldest student honorary at Ohio State, SPHINX selection is based on scholarship, leadership, and direct service to the University. Each applicant is required to hold a 3.00 GPA minimum, completed 60 semester credit hours, and plan to graduate any semester after Summer 2018.

Chimes Junior Class Honorary Recruitment
Chimes Junior Class Honorary is one of the two junior class honoraries on Ohio State’s campus. If you are looking for an opportunity to be a part of an organization that provides service to a local philanthropy around Columbus as well as builds connections with students across campus with diverse backgrounds and fields of study, this is for you! We are looking for 35 students that will be able to carry Chimes through another successful year as they embark onto their junior year of college. The application to be a part of this wonderful student organization is open to all sophomores at Ohio State with a GPA of 3.00 or above!

Complete your FAFSA now!
Starting with the 2017­–18 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®), the following changes have been put in place: Students are now able to submit a FAFSA® earlier.  Students have been able to file a 2017–18 FAFSA since Oct. 1, 2016, rather than beginning on Jan. 1, 2017. The earlier submission date is a permanent change, enabling students to complete and submit a FAFSA as early as Oct. 1 every year. (There is NO CHANGE to the 2016–17 schedule. The FAFSA became available Jan. 1 as in previous years.) Students now report earlier income information. Beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA, students are required to report income information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017–18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) must report their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information. Complete your FAFSA application here.CFAES Scholarship Application is now open for 2017-18
All students in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences are encouraged to fill out the College Scholarship Application for the 2017-18 academic year. You will only need to fill out one application to be eligible for scholarships from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, School of Environment and Natural Resources, and ATI/Wooster. The priority deadline for completing the application is February 15, 2017.

The simple on-line form requires you to write a short 300 word essay, list of present and previous work experience, involvement in extracurricular activities, provide details about involvement in groups. Students in the School of Environment and Natural Resources will only need to complete this application for 2017-18 as the supplemental questions are within this application. Night for Young Professionals
Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) invites you to attend Night for Young Professionals (NYP) on Tuesday, September 27 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. NYP is a FREE evening to learn the “tricks of the trade” from industry leaders from the food, agricultural, and environmental science industries. Workshop breakouts will focus on preparation for the upcoming CFAES Career Fair (September 29). Breakouts will include Resume Critique, Career Fair Cues and Clues as well as What’s After the Interview. We encourage you to use this evening to network and further develop your professional skills!

The National Agriscience Preservice Teacher Program (NAPTP) is committed to promoting inquiry-based teaching methods and the enhancement of science in agriculture to preservice teachers in agricultural education across the nation. This fall, preservice teachers can apply to attend an interactive, hands-on agriscience training program at the 2016 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN. Selected participants will be challenged to develop inquiry-based lessons to use during their student teaching experience, as well as when they enter the teaching profession. Apply by September 16Click here for more information.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity: Communication
Dr. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick is seeking an undergraduate research to volunteer (academic credit possible) 4 – 9 hours per week (flexible) during Autumn term. The position will be in the Entertainment Lab within the School of Communication, primarily working on two projects. The first involves investigating whether people read more news that they agree or disagree with in print magazine versus online website settings. The second involves seeing if website interactivity (e.g. Facebook and Twitter ‘likes’) can increase people’s reading of news they disagree with. The first project will primarily involve coding and analyzing collected data from experiments run last semester. The second project will involve running and conducting lab sessions, with possible analysis of the data later on. The position may also involve occasional work on other projects from the Entertainment Lab during the semester.

The entertainment research lab consists of doctoral students, Professor Knobloch-Westerwick, and undergraduate research assistants. We meet weekly to discuss research projects (the meeting is voluntary for undergraduate collaborators). The team has had several successful research assistants in the past, and we look forward to having some on board this semester.\

Undergraduate research assistants may gather experiences in the following research activities:

  • Certification in collecting data from research participants, collecting data in the research lab
  • Assisting with developing research procedures (questionnaires, instructions)
  • Setting up online research procedures
  • Coding observed behaviors or media stimuli
  • Assisting with compiling and developing media stimuli, editing video and/or text stimuli
  • Brainstorming research ideas and approaches
  • Discussing and presenting research publications

Student should possess a strong interest in social scientific research; we like to have motivated, reliable, friendly people on the team.  GPA of 3.5 or higher preferred.
